Changing a Device CAL to a User CAL? |
|
|
Hi all! This is a really great forum! I have a question about CALs.
I have 10 device CALs (uninstalled), and I realize that I need user CALs. The info I have been getting from Microsoft is ambiguous.
I do not have Microsoft Software Assurance service.
Is there a way to install them as User CALs? Or convert them? |

IMHO the server can't really tell the difference between a user CAL add pack
and a device CAL add pack.
AFAIK there is no page in SBS which says "you have installed 5 device CALs
and 10 user CALs". It just says "you have installed 15 CALs".
My $0.02? Just install them :-)

As Jim said, the SBS server can't tell the difference between a User CAL and
a Device CAL. CAL license tracking is a "paperwork thing" even though they
require activation. You're supposed to write down which user (User CAL) or
device (Device CAL) you assign each CAL to.
Without SA (Software Assurance), I think you're out of luck. Not sure if
you could return them for credit or exchange to your licensing vendor, but
may be worth a phone call.

Q. Can I switch between user CALs and device CALs?
A. If you have Software Assurance for your Windows Small Business Server
2003 CALs, you can switch between user CALs and device CALs, or vice
versa, when you renew your Software Assurance contract. If you do not
have Software Assurance for your Windows Small Business Server 2003
CALs, then you cannot switch.
