Is it possible to add custom fields to an end users account in active
directory? Something other than the default fields like "First Name, Last
Name" etc?

Haven't ever done this but creating a new attribute in the schema and
associating it it with the user class should do it. But seriously test this
in a separate enviroment before doing it in production. There is only one
schema master in a forest so changes will replicate to all DCs in every
domain in your forest. The below article is for Srv 2000 but will point you
in the right direction if you are using 2003 (some things will differ
slightly

Thanks,

Mark

Thanks Mark for this info. I agree this is something you want to be very
careful about doing. It looks very much in depth. I was hoping it would not
be this much trouble but looks like it will be.

Extending the schema should be done carefully and with consideration, but it
is not really that hard to do. As previously suggested, practice on a test
domain. ADAM instances are great for this too.

Extending the UI of AD U&C is a pretty big deal as it requires some
development (C++).

Creating a web UI or something similar to support your new attributes is not
as big of a deal and is done all the time.
