"downgrade" from SPS to WSS |
|
|
Hi all,
We currently have a portal running on one of our SharePoint Portal server
boxes. Recently there has been a request to move this portal to one of our
client's servers in their own domain, as opposed to ours (we are a small
consulting company working within a bigger company). Due to liscensing
issues, SPS cannot be installed on their boxes. They only have WSS on their
machines.
Now the question is what are the steps to migrate an SPS portal to a server
running just WSS? The good news is that the portal DOES NOT use any of SPS's
advanced features that are missing in WSS.
If this is if at all possible, please let me know how.
Thanks,
Yusuf Hasan |

Not sure if it is possible or not. Even though you are not using any of
the advanced features of SPS you are still using SPS and all the WSS sites
were created under SPS. You may be able to backup the individual WSS Sites
and restore although with the new server being on a different domain I would
guess your security would get screwed up.

Yes, I was uncertain too.
But what I would try is doing smigrate of a WSS site in SPS 2003 and seeing
if that loads correctly into standalone WSS. I know it works the other way,
I've just never tried it that way. (The idea being that smigrate is less
demanding than stsadm and thus might work where backup/restore doesn't)
Of course all authentications; security are lost. But my assumption would be
that as they are moving to a completely different location they'll be
needing new authentication anyway.

Hi again,
Just wanted to thank both of ya'll for your advice. The migration worked
using the smigrate tool to first backup up the sub site on the existing SPS
server and then restoring it on the new WSS server. With regards to
preserving the permissions, it wasn't an issue for my case, because we needed
to create permissions in the new server from scratch anyway. Just to be sure
nothing messed up, I intentionally used the "-x" switch for smigrate so there
wouldn't be an attempt to transfer the old permissions into the new context.
One tip for other people who'd like to do the same is to make sure to create
a blank site first on the destination server by using the "Sites and
Workspaces" link on the Create page of your portal and then closing the
browser when asked for a template for the newly created site. You must do
this because, even specifying "Blank website" in the template selection step
won't allow you to do the migration.
Regards,
Yusuf

Sorry. I could have mentioned the thing you write about in your tip, but
I've done smigrate so often it's become "obvious".
Apologies if you had to first do this wrong. I hope you didn't waste too
much time.

Hi Engelbert,
No problem, I read the instructions before hand regarding smigrate at :
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/office/office2003/maintain/bureswss.mspx#EDAA
One question though, do you see any solution to retaining the "modified by"
and the "posted by" fields from the original WSS site on the old server? When
restoring the WSS site in the new domain, both these fields for basically ALL
documents become: "\\newDomain\administrator". I'm inferring that since WSS
validates this user info from Active Directory, the site defaults to the
administrator account since the "user name/old domain name combo" are not
recognized in the new domain.
But for audit purposes, there is a need to retain these two fields for all
past document posts.
Any ideas??
Thanks,
Yusuf

I think there is a third-party tool that claims to do this.
I can't remember which but you could check out the ones listed in the list
of products here
http://www.asaris-matrix.com/mvp-walsh/Lists/WSS%20FAQ/VII%20view%20%20WSS%20Products.aspx
that seem as if they might be relevant.
