Alerts & permissions |
|
|
I'm having a problem with alerts and permissions:
I’d like users to be able to submit list items, and be able to only view &
edit their own. I’d like members of a special group and the administrator to
be able to view, edit and delete all list items, and set alerts to be
notified when a user submits a new list item.
So, I set list item level permissions to “read own” & “edit own.” As
expected, the users can see only their own, and the administrator can see
everyone’s. Yet the administrator cannot set an alert to the list. An error
page appears, stating :
"You cannot create alerts for lists for which users can only read their own
items."
If the administrator has permissions to view and edit items, why can’t he be
alerted of a new item? Is there something I can modify on the permissions to
solve this?
Any suggestions appreciated.

There is a free web part from Jan Tielens which allows administrators to
specify alerts for other users.
It's listed in the WSS FAQ's section VII.
(or direct link to the mirror site ->

where it is the second item listed)

Thanks Mike.
I downloaded and forwarded to my sysadmin, but he had no luck installing it,
perhaps because of our unique configuration. The msi file seemed to install
properly (no error mesages, even in the event log), but the files weren't
installed. He would like to try another way, but it requires the dll, which
was not provided. |

It's a while (since it came out in fact) since I installed this.
Perhaps you could try sending a message directly to Jan. I suspect if you go
to his blog's home page (via the link for the web part) you should get his
address.
Otherwise Jan now works for U2U in Belgium, so you could try there. (Their
address is included in the list of Training companies in section VII of the
WSS FAQ.)
