Hi,

I am experiencing a problem when I back up my system state using either
Veritas Backup Exec 10.0 or NTBACKUP. In either case once the backup begins
my Available Physical Memory quickly decreases, and the SERVICES.EXE process
increases its memory useage from less than 4MB to over 140MB within a matter
of minutes. I have installed SP1 for Server 2003, and all the Volume Shadow
Copy patches/hotfixes available are for pre-SP1 computers. Regardless, I had
this problem on the same computer before applying SP1. The server is a
domain controller, and that's it. I have a second Server 2003 computer that
exhibits the exact same behavior when the System State is backed up. I
believe this is either a problem with NTBACKUP or a continued Volume Shadow
Services issue but I have been unsuccessful in resolving this problem. Is
anyone else experiencing this issue, or do you have a suggestion to correct
the problem I am having? Thanks so much!

Chris

I think you need to start by looking at updating all firmware and hardware
drivers on your machine.

These servers are not very old (~3 months) but I did go through and attempt
to update all the drivers that I could. Everything is up to date, the
firmware on the RAID controller (Dell PERC 6) is also current.

I updated Symantec's Symevent process because I read that there can be
problems between that and backup software, but that didn't help either.
After that failed to resolve the issue I completely uninstalled the Symantec
Corporate Antivirus 9.0 and I still get the same behavior.

Thanks, but do you have any other suggestions?

Chris
