Hello. I've just installed fresh SBS2003 Premium (without SP1) until
ToDo list.
The 'Help and Support' service worked fine.

Then, I installed ISA 2000 and run 'Connect to the Internet'
wizard.
After this, Help and Support service hangs on every SECOND search for
about 5 minutes, and after this time, search ends normally. Every time
Help and Support service after one normal search, second search does
with hang and so on.

I tried all suggestions that find into this newsgroup for example:
%SYSTEMROOT%\PCHEALTH\HELPCTR\Binaries/helpsvc /svchost netsvcs
/regserver /install or as shown in
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_h.htm#h&s

but nothing helped.

Please, any suggestions.

HI,

Welcome to SBS newsgroup.

Issue description:
=============

I understand that you encountered problem when using "Help and search"
function on SBS 2003 server.

Analyzing and suggestions:
==============

Generally speaking, the Help and Support Center may consume considerable
resources, and it may take a few minutes to finish the search in some
circumstance. Therefore, the system may become unresponsive during the
search.

If this is not the case, let's perform a Clean Boot to troubleshoot the
issue. A Clean Boot will allow us to isolate any device drivers or programs
that are loading at startup that may be causing a conflict with other
device drivers or programs that are installed in your computer.

A. Click Start, click Run, type "msconfig" (without the quotation marks)
and click OK.
B. Select "Selective Startup" and remove the checks from each item below
the Selective Startup option.
C. On the "Services" tab, click Enable All.
D. Check "Hide all Microsoft Services", click Disable All and clear "Hide
all Microsoft Services".
E. Click the OK button and then Click Yes to restart your computer.
F. Try again.

Related information:

If the issue still exists, you may also try to reinstall the Help and
Support Center and see if it helps:

A. Open Windows Explorer.
B. Navigator to the C:\windows\inf\ folder.
C. Right-click the pchealth.inf file and click Install.

If this still not work, please follow the steps below to rebuild Help and
Support center. Please kindly go through the steps above before try the
steps below:

Remove the .cab files from the Package store folder, and then rebuild the
original Help and Support Center:

a. Click Start, click Run, type "cmd" (without the quotation marks), and
then click OK to open a command prompt. Type "net stop helpsvc" (without
the quotation marks), and then press ENTER.
b. Type "cd /d <windir>\pchealth\helpctr" (without the quotation marks),
where <windir> is the Windows folder, and then press ENTER.

Hi, Charles Yang (MSFT)
Thanks for your effort,

I tried all your three suggested methods, but problem
remains :(

I can search some keyword in 'Help and Support Center' for first time
successfully and quickly. When I try to search once more, the same
keyword for example - 'Help and Support Center' hangs. No running
'green squares', no additional noticeable CPU activity
on CPU Usage History curve, no reaction on any click in this Help
service, no any bad log events. After about 5 minutes the search
becomes alive and ends normally. I tried safe mode, tried to reinstall
through .inf file, tried to rebuild this service as you suggested, but
nothing helped.

I need to close Help and support center after every one search, and
reopen it , when I want to use it. There is the only way to avoid
hanging, yet.

Thank you.

HI,

Thanks for updates.

The issue seems to be so wired, please change the search option to limit
the search fields to see if you can still reproduce the issue. For example,
you can set return to 15 results per provider.

Thanks for your cooperate on this issue. As I know, the help and support
will search a lot of resources, so we might encounter some delay.

Hi, Charles Yang
Thanks for your patience,

I tried to set return results option for 5 results per provider in
'Help and Support Center' search options. This didn't help.

This problem disappeared, when I turned off searching in Microsoft
Knowledge Base option. After this, the search is always quick and
without hanging.
I can connect to Internet from this server and I made all windows
updates through windows update page. May be I need to do some
configurations in ISA server, if I want to use search in Microsoft
Knowledge Base option.

But the most interesting part in this problem was, that every first
search for some keyword in Help center was without hanging and every
second search was with hanging, when search Microsoft Knowledge Base
option was turned on.

Thank You

I have not connected clients yet.

By the way, I tried installing the same SBS 2003 with the same

another place (at home). I got the same situation and the same problem.

Experiment:
1. Search for keyword 'client' in 'Help and Support Center' when check
box 'Microsoft Knowledge Base' is turned off = 2 seconds.
2. I turned on 'Microsoft Knowledge Base' check box and search for
keyword 'client'. The search not hangs, I can see running squares and
'Help and support center' responds to my clicks. Search time = 30
seconds. No any results from 'Microsoft Knowledge Base'
3. I search for keyword 'client' once again. 'Help and support center'
hangs, no running green squares, no responds to may clicks. Search
time = 4 minutes. No any results from 'Microsoft Knowledge Base'. When
I pushed on 'Microsoft Knowledge Base' topic, I get message, that I
must to connect to Internet to use this search option. But I have
internet connection and can browse Microsoft site.

HI,

Thanks for updates.

After researching, we found the problem should be caused by the Internet
connection issue. Before we go any further, can I assume that you are using
ISA 2004?

If so, please make sure that if on your ISA firewall policy section, the
localhost is applied to all the user and the protocol should be HTTPS HTTP
NTP Ident. Please also make sure that you have rerun CEICW to make sure
that "Ask unauthorized user for authorize" will be unchecked. (This should
be caused by the help and support services run on local system account, by
default system account will not be allowed to access internet.

If possible, please also offer us the ISA log: you can collect ISA log
follow the suggestion below:

Please also collect your latest ISA log and send to me, pleas save it as
the W3C format.

You can find the log files at the following locations.
C:\Program Files\Microsoft ISA Server\ISALogs

I really appreciate your understanding on this issue. I am currently making
research on this issue also. Please feel free to post back your results. I
am glad to be of further assistance.

| I don't made any changes due to this article, because all my settings

|
| > In additional, please also disable any third party filter on ISA to test

| No any additional third party filters on ISA. I don't made any
| additional configurations on ISA, only this which was made by 'connect
| to Internet wizard'.
|
| > If possible, please also check if the issue only occurs on your SBS

| I have not connected clients yet.
| By the way, I tried installing the same SBS 2003 with the same

|
| Experiment:
| 1. Search for keyword 'client' in 'Help and Support Center' when check

| 2. I turned on 'Microsoft Knowledge Base' check box and search for
| keyword 'client'. The search not hangs, I can see running squares and
| 'Help and support center' responds to my clicks. Search time = 30

| 3. I search for keyword 'client' once again. 'Help and support center'
| hangs, no running green squares, no responds to may clicks. Search

| I pushed on 'Microsoft Knowledge Base' topic, I get message, that I

Hi Charles Yang,

| After researching, we found the problem should be caused by the
Internet
| connection issue. Before we go any further, can I assume that you are
| using ISA 2004?

No. I am using ISA 2000 (ver.3.0.1200.166 SP1).

Thanks for your effort

HI,

Thanks for your emails,

After checking the ISA log carefully, I found when you use Help and
Support, you encountered HTTP error 407, it should be a denied error by
authentication issue. Just as I referred on my reply, please follow the
steps below:

ISA 2000:

1. Open ISA server managements.
2. Right click the SBS server node choose the properties.
3. On the Outgoing web request tab, make sure that "Ask unauthorized user
for identification is unechecked.
4. Restart the ISA services.

This issue should be caused by your ISA 2000 need authentication for
outgoing web request while in help and support center, we use anonymous
access to internet which will be blocked by ISA 2000 by default, as this
user did not belong to Internet user group.

Thanks so much for your understanding on this issue, please feel free to
let me know the results. I am glad to help you.

Charles Yang (MSFT)

Hi,

Thanks for updates.

After checking your log files, we found the issue is still related with
your ISA configuration, please first check the following section as my
referred:

Based on my experience, this issue can occur if you created a Site and
Content Rule or Protocol Rule which is denying access to this user or to a
group which the user belongs to. If you do not want to block users from
accessing the Internet, I suggest you open ISA Management Console, go to
Servers and Arrays\ServerName\Access Policy\Site and Content Rule, open a
rule, click "Applies To" and make sure "Any request" is selected, do the
same things with all the rules; go to Protocol Rules and make sure all
rules appliy to "Any request". Go to Monitoring\Services and restart the
Firewall and Proxy services. Then check if everything is OK.

If the issue still exists, it is your best interest to send me your
ISAinfo, You can refer to my suggestion below:

ISAinfo for ISA 2000:

Please use the ISAinfo tool from the following web site to collect your ISA
information to me for further investigation.
http://www.isatools.org/isainfo.vbe

NOTE: Double click this .vbe will generate the log files.

Please feel free to let me know, if you have any further concerns. I will
be here waiting for your updates.

This solved problem :)

I configured that all 'Protocol Rules' and 'Site and Content Rules'
Applies To 'Any request' and Help and Support center begins work
properly and not hangs. I can see results from Microsoft Knowledge Base
too.
As I remember, I don't changed and don't added any rules for ISA after
Internet connection wizard default installation and always
worked as Administrator but this was not enough to work with Help
center properly.

Big thank for your patience and assistance.
