Reusing Web parts defined in other sites. |
|
|
In Sharepoint services, should I be able to reuse a defined web part used in
a different site on the same server.. For example I have a document library
defined that I wish to reuse in another site. Or is this reuse functionality
only available when I upgrade to Portal Server? |

It depends what you mean by re-use.
You can use FP 2003's Data View option to create a web part showing the
content of a List (such as a doc lib) that is in another site on the same
server. (Only the original doc lib will be the master where you add/delete
etc.).
Is that the sort of thing you meant ?

Not sure! I'm not using FrontPage.
I'm just trying to re-add an existing doc-lib web part defined and populated
elsewhere in the site, but the defined doc library doesn't appear, when I
browse the available web parts.
Is there a preference on the site or the specific web part to enable it to
be re-used?

There's no such preference.
Your problem is that the document library is available in pages in the same
site only.
When you want to use a document library in another site then you have two
main options.
1. FP 2003 Data View which can grab the List (doc lib) directly
2. FP 2003 Data View accessing the data base (this also works if the site is
on another server).
[1. is easier]
Or I suppose write some code that accesses the database or maybe code that
uses web services to access the list.
The FP solution is the easiest imo as it involves no coding at all.
If you don't have FP 2003 you ought to get it because you can do lots of
other things with it such as sorting Quick View links. (and forget any
misconceptions that you might have about FP - this is nowadays a solid and
useful product)

Thanks for the info Engelbert,
So in summary you saying to RE-USE document libraries, lists or other
defined web parts in other sites on a single WSS box I need Frontpage?!
If we purchased Portal Server would this also enable these web parts to be
reused.
Sorry if I'm repeating myself, I'm still not clear.... Or smart enough!

I'm saying that it works (only with FP 2003 btw). But note that I was very
careful to say that you create Data View web parts from the *Lists*
(including "Libraries") on the server not from other web parts.
This FP usage is also available in the WSS part of SPS 2003.
(Personally I think that every admin needs a copy of FP 2003 - if only to
sort his/her Quick Launch lists easily.)
Going further and trying to answer the other (more hidden) part of your
question ... STS the forerunner of WSS used to store a document library as a
directory in the file system and so documents in it were only located in
that (document library) in that physical path under the site. WSS does the
same but instead of doing it physically in the file system, it does it
logically (using that same "address") in the database. But in effect the
document is still in a (doc lib) directory in (under) a single site and
while you can copy it to another site you then would have two completely
independent doc libs and you'd need to upload any new document to both (i.e
twice). So you instead use something to just display the contents of the doc
lib in the second site and FP 2003 Data View happens to be a quick way to do
that.
I hope that's clearer. It took long enough :)
