How to use Audience |
|
|
Can anyone please help me with Audience?
I dont understand the concept of it. I have the area where I restricted
certain users to enter now what's good about using Audience if security
already applied and identified?
SOmeone please could you give me an example of your scenario / case
studies?
Much appreciated

Security only restricts what the users will have access to, audiences
filter the content so they don't see it. Having both applied to say an
area will make it both invisible and even if they knew the url they
wouldn't have access to it.

Re: How to use Audience |

We are using it in my company. It is when you want content targeted by
a users "attributes" rather than a security issue. Here's a couple of
examples which apply both to the portal home page (http://portal for
this example)
1. Users will be accessing this site from London and New York. HR has
an announcement about 401(k) enrollment to put on the portal home.
Since this doesn't apply readily to UK employees, they target the
listing to just US employees. This is not a security issue, foreign
employees should not be prohibited from viewing the content (In fact,
US workers working abroad may require the info)
2. There are 6 domestic offices on our portal. I would like to put a
weather web part on the home page, but I would like it to be targeted
to each location (IE Boston sees boston weather, Dallas sees dallas
weather.) I put 6 weather web parts on the home page, configure each
for different offices. Each web part is targeted using audiences to the
appropriate locale. The end user only sees one web part, and it has
thier weather info. |

Re: How to use Audience |

Hi Bill
Thanks for the prompt reply.
I still need a bit more of an example please if you dont mind
Say if I make all pages default permission as 'Reader', if I only want
to have certain audience see the content I could use Target Audience is
that right? If the users are not the member of certain audience, they
wont see it when access the area but if they use search, will content
that does not ALL PORTAL users target audience include in the search or
not?
Your quote above, does it mean that anyone can see the topic area per
say but certain content in that topics not necessary show to all
Readers if they are not members of that audience of that topic target
audience?
Does this make sense?
Many thanks in advance.

You are correct that if a user is not part of an audiencce, they will not
see content that is targeted to that audience. However, when they perform a
search, they will see links to content that is not targted to them. They'll
be denied access once they try to open the link though. I wish it weren't
this way.

You and Bill seem to be saying that applying area security only keeps them
from being able to access an area, and that if you want it to also be
invisible to them you have to use audiences as well? That doesn't seem to
make a lot of sense ... you could elaborate on how you keep a user from
seeing an area (removing their access under the security setting of the area
page doesn't work.)
Thanks,

By chance, are the users in question members of the local administrators
group on the SharePoint server? Administrators have full access, even if you
haven't explicity added them as users in your portal.

Nope, no one but me is in the administrators group on the SharePoint server
itself.
I should also mention this. Today I set up a new WSS site using one of MS's
WSS application templates. When I go into the WSS site and manage security
for that site, it works perfectly. Users on the SPS portal can see
everything, but as soon as they follow the link to the WSS site, the security
kicks in and keeps them out, exactly as it should. WSS site security works
and SPS Portal security works on the home page. Only the security for SPS
areas within the SPS portal server don't seem to work.

Try this in one of your areas:
Follow "Manage Security" link under the Actions menu
Select the "Only show to users with View Area right." option
Choose the "Disable Anonymous Access" option if its enabled
Select all of the site groups that are listed
Select the "Remove Permissions" option
Now try accessing this area. Make sure that you are not logged is as someone

I got the problem solved. You have to physically remove the default site
groups from the area. Someone said that, but I thought that they meant to
just make sure no one was assigned to these groups.

that right? If the users are not the member of certain audience,
they
wont see it when access the area but if they use search, will
content
that does not ALL PORTAL users target audience include in the
search
or
not?
Your quote above, does it mean that anyone can see the topic area
per
say but certain content in that topics not necessary show to all
Readers if they are not members of that audience of that topic
target
audience?
Does this make sense?
Many thanks in advance.
