Creating new DFS Root - Testing |
|
|
I currently have one server hosting my DFS root. I am going to add two
additional Servers for redundancy. I am later going to remove the original
DFS root server (to rebuild the box). Is there a way I can tell which root
server the client is getting it's info from?
I would like to know that clients are successfully connecting to DFS via one
of the new root servers before I remove the original DFS root server.
Thanks,

Unless you have Dfsutil installed on the client, the easiest way to tell is
to use the client navigate to the root of the namespace. Then look at the
root folder's properties in Windows Explorer. There will be a DFS tab there,
and on that tab you can see which root target is active.
Before you remove the original root server, you might want to disable its
referrals for some period of time. It will still be part of the namespace,
but clients won't get referrals to it. Once you are sure that the clients
are no longer accessing this target (using a cached referral), you can
decomission the server.
We have lots of info about DFS up at www.microsoft.com/dfs if you are
interested.

DOH, I just realized I made a mistake. You can do this for links but not for
roots. Sorry about that! Seemed like such a good idea at the time...

No problem.
I didn't realize that it was that easy to see what server clients use for
their root server!
Thanks for the info.
