We've created a tool to migrate documents from a non-sharepoint system into
Sharepoint, which uses an XML version of the non-sharepoint file structure to
create the folder structure in Sharepoint. We then use a webservice to upload
the files into Sharepoint.

This all works fine until we encounter long path names over 260 characters
(eg. nested folders and long file names) which occurs frequently as the users
of the old system frequently nested folders many levels deep.

Does anyone know of any way to get around this character limit?

The error message produced by the webservice is:
"The specified file or folder name is too long. The URL path for all files
and folders must be 260 characters or less (and no more than 128 characters
for any single file or folder name in the URL). Please type a shorter file or
folder name."

Hi,
There is no workaround, because this is a "hard" limit of SPS. From the
Admin SDK: "Portal site URL - The URL for the portal site is limited to 255
characters for the entire URL, including virtual directories."
