Hi,

I'm guessing from what I've read so far that my company's MSCMS
configuration is woefully inadequate.

We have 3 dedicated servers with MSCMS 2001 installed, one of which has
authoring enabled. The servers are all dual 1.2GHz pentiums with 1GB
memory. There are 2 separate database servers (clustered) with dual
3.6GHz Xeon processors and 6GB memory.

The node cache in the SCA is set at 8000, and the memory cache is at
2000 - same on all servers

Having run the Microsoft script for calculating the node cache size
based on site size, we received a value of about 120,000. (Some of the
resources are upto 5MB in size if this matters?)

I've seen the recommended max node cache. Given our site size, should
the node cache be set at 35,000? What about the memory cache?

Our Intranet is a peculiar beast. We find it runs stormingly well at
times, yet at others we (40,000 users) have to wait upto 45 seconds for
a page to load. This period of poor performance can last for a couple
of hours then magically start running well again. Some of my team are
convinced the performance lag is due to authentication/domain
controller problems, but I'm not entirely convinced.

Just to note, the site is pretty well ordered. I don't believe there's
any channel depth beyond about 8 containers. A typical container
contains between 30 and 200 items. Some of our users insist on loading
large resources, which unfortunately we're powerless to prevent - the
customer's will prevails.

Hopefully I've ellaborated enough. Anyone got any ideas what may be
causing the performance bottle neck, or recommendations for the cache
settings.

Thanks in anticipation.

Andrew

Hi,

you are mixing up terms. The node cache IS the memory cache - so it can be
either 2000 or 8000 - not both.
In addition the node or memory cache does not hold resources. These are hold
in the disk cache - so resource size does not matter.
Only placeholder content matters.

You should not configure the node cache size to more than 35000.

Cheers,
Stefan
