Hi Ariel,
In the system and application event logs, are there any errors logged that
would give a clue?
Why is there so little data on your C:\ drive?

RE: SBS Backup - Inconsistency |
|

Hello Ariel,
Thank you for posting to the SBS Newsgroup.
Thanks a lot for Les Connor's input!
I understand that after you performed server Backup, you noticed "NTBackup
finished the backup with errors" in the Backup log. If I have misunderstood
your concern, please let me know.
Please take your time to see my following suggestions, if the issue
persists, please help to gather more detail error information for further
research:
========================
Suggestion:
In the Backup log you have applied, I notice the following error message:
"Error: An inconsistency was encountered on the requested media"
I find following two KB articles that have the same error symptom with your
issue. Please have a look and install the hotfix.
887975 "An inconsistency was encountered on the requested media" error when
you
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=887975
817765 The Windows backup utility does not succeed when you use a USB tape
drive
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=817765
=========================
Gather information:
If the issue persists, please help to gather following information:
1. You mentioned "It seems the backup is good , but in the server
management snapin backup shows up as "Failed"", I have several questions:
a. How did you know "backup is good"?
b. You mentioned "backup shows up as "Failed"", if you click Fail, is there
any error message shown to you? If yes, copy and paste the full content to
the Newsgroup.
2. If we run NTBackup manually to local drive and load the script created
by SBS backup, will this issue occur? To do so,
a. Click Start, click Run, type ntbackup, and then press Enter. The Backup
or Restore Wizard launches.
b. On the Welcome to the Backup or Restore Wizard page, click Advanced Mode.
c. Click the Backup tab. From the Job menu, choose Load Selections.
d. In the File Name box type %sbsprogramdir%\backup.
e. Click Small Business Backup Script.bks to select, and click Open.
f. Please choose your local drive as backup destination.
g. On the Backup tab, click Start Backup.
h. Can the problem be reproduced?
3. Please help to gather following log files for further research:
a. On the server, run "eventvwr" (without quotation marks), check whether
there is any error. If yes, double click it, click the Copy button and
paste the full content to the Newsgroup.
b. C:\Documents and Settings\SBS Backup User\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Windows NT\NTBackup\data\backup08.log.
c. All log files in'%sbsprogramdir%\Support\Backup Logs.
Please take your time to perform the steps above and collect the
information for us to troubleshoot your issue. If anything is unclear,
please feel free to let me know. I am looking forward to hearing from you!
Best regards,
Brandy Nee

RE: SBS Backup - Inconsistency |
|
|
Hi Brady , thanks alot for your exstensive checklist and answer
-Yes you do got me right :)
Suggestions section.:
-Looked at your suggestions but I can't see this will apply to my case. I'm
using a HP Storageworks DAT 12/24 internal SCSI DSS3 drive. It is terminated
as to the manual , cleaned and I bought new tapes for it.As far as I can tell
it is compatible with Windows 2003 SBS.
Tried yesterday to rollback driver to see if it would make any difference
but no joy.
Gather Information Section.:
1a. I do not know the entire backup is good , but the files shows up at the
tape and I tried restore a few with no problems. So it's a guess it is good
from my side.
1b. What I mean with "It shows up as failed" , in the Servermanagement ->
Backup , it sais failed , failed , failed with dates all the way to the
bottom. I can click "View log" which is the log I pasted in here yesterday.
The log looks the same each day , only the dates are changing.
2a-h. Yes ! problem can be reproduced .I did try to make manual backups. As
I first suspected the tapedrive was blown , I tried backing up to a file
instead. This allso fails. I allso modified the backupscript to make a small
selection of files and thus speed up testinprocess for manual backup. The
backup "to file" fails with the same errors.I'm guessing this means there is
nothing wrong with my tape drive ?

Aditionally I'll add some info I don't know if is relevant , it seems like
the DHCP generates an error in the systemlog every other day to different

Thank you for posting to the SBS Newsgroup.
Thanks a lot for Les Connor's input!
I understand that after you performed server Backup, you noticed "NTBackup
finished the backup with errors" in the Backup log. If I have misunderstood
your concern, please let me know.
Please take your time to see my following suggestions, if the issue
persists, please help to gather more detail error information for further
research:
========================
=========================
Best regards,
Brandy Nee

Hi Ariel,
Don't deselect anything when you run the SBS backup wizard, just go with the
defaults.
Files in use are not an issue; the backup uses Volume Shadow Copy technology
to back up open files.

Hello Ariel,
Thank you for posting back!
Thanks a lot for Les' input!
Ariel, I am sorry that from your reply, I still cannot have a clear idea
whether you have tried backing up to local drive. From the Event Log, I
still found the following error information:
"Error: An inconsistency was encountered on the requested media."
As Les said, we do not need to modify the settings in Backup script to
prevent it backing up open files, since we use Volume Shadow Copy service.
So I suggest that we rerun the Backup Wizard to create a new Backup script,
and manually run the NTBackup to local drive. To do so,
a. Expand to Server Management\Standard Management\Backup.
b. On the right pane, click Configure Backup.
c. Run the Windows Small Business Server Backup Wizard.
d. Backup Location: please select "Back up to a local hard disk ...".
e. Finish rest of the wizard.
f. Back to step b, click Backup Now.
g. Can this issue be reproduce?
h. Repeat the steps in my last reply to manually run NTBackup to local
drive. Will this issue occur?
If the issue persists even though you backup to local drive, please send
following log files to my mailbox again:
a. The Backupxx.log files in the folder 'C:\Documents and Settings\SBS
Backup User\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows
NT\NTBackup\data'.
b. The Sbsbackuplog0x.log files which can be located under the folder
'%sbsprogramdir%\Support\Backup Logs'.
c. On the server, run "eventvwr" (without quotation marks), check whether
there is any error. If yes, double click it, click the Copy button and
paste the full content to the Newsgroup.
My Mailbox: v-branee@microsoft.com.
I also found the following Document for you to better understand Volume
Shadow Copy in Backup.

Please take your time to perform the steps above and collect the

please feel free to let me know. I am looking forward to hearing from you!

It is
terminated
as to the manual , cleaned and I bought new tapes for it.As far as I can
tell
it is compatible with Windows 2003 SBS.
Tried yesterday to rollback driver to see if it would make any difference
but no joy.
Gather Information Section.:
1a. I do not know the entire backup is good , but the files shows up at
the
tape and I tried restore a few with no problems. So it's a guess it is
good
from my side.
1b. What I mean with "It shows up as failed" , in the Servermanagement -
Backup , it sais failed , failed , failed with dates all the way to the
bottom. I can click "View log" which is the log I pasted in here
yesterday.
The log looks the same each day , only the dates are changing.
2a-h. Yes ! problem can be reproduced .I did try to make manual backups.
As
I first suspected the tapedrive was blown , I tried backing up to a file
instead. This allso fails. I allso modified the backupscript to make a
small
selection of files and thus speed up testinprocess for manual backup. The
backup "to file" fails with the same errors.I'm guessing this means there
is
nothing wrong with my tape drive ?

Hello Ariel,
Thank you for posting to the SBS Newsgroup.
Thanks a lot for Les Connor's input!
I understand that after you performed server Backup, you noticed
"NTBackup

misunderstood
your concern, please let me know.
Please take your time to see my following suggestions, if the issue
persists, please help to gather more detail error information for
further
research:
========================
Suggestion:
In the Backup log you have applied, I notice the following error
message:
"Error: An inconsistency was encountered on the requested media"
I find following two KB articles that have the same error symptom with
your
issue. Please have a look and install the hotfix.

If the issue persists, please help to gather following information:
1. You mentioned "It seems the backup is good , but in the server
management snapin backup shows up as "Failed"", I have several
questions:
a. How did you know "backup is good"?
b. You mentioned "backup shows up as "Failed"", if you click Fail, is
there
any error message shown to you? If yes, copy and paste the full content
to
the Newsgroup.
2. If we run NTBackup manually to local drive and load the script
created
by SBS backup, will this issue occur? To do so,
a. Click Start, click Run, type ntbackup, and then press Enter. The
Backup
or Restore Wizard launches.
b. On the Welcome to the Backup or Restore Wizard page, click Advanced
Mode.
3. Please help to gather following log files for further research:
a. On the server, run "eventvwr" (without quotation marks), check
whether

Re: SBS Backup - Inconsistency |
|
|
Hi again and thanks for your replies :)
To quote myself from earlier posts.:
Post1:
"I tried backing up both to tape and file with same result"
Post2::
"2a-h. Yes ! problem can be reproduced .I did try to make manual backups.
As I first suspected the tapedrive was blown , I tried backing up to a file
instead. This allso fails. I allso modified the backupscript to make a
small selection of files and thus speed up testinprocess for manual
backup.The
backup "to file" fails with the same errors.I'm guessing this means there
is nothing wrong with my tape drive ?"
So , Yes I did try to backup to local drive , and yes it still fails :\
Guess I expressed myself wrong when saying "backup to file", should be
"backup to local drive"
I kinda figured and hoped that shadowcopy did what I thought , but thanks
for making this clear :)
Hope this additional info makes things a bit clearer
Regards , Ariel

Thank you for posting back!
Thanks a lot for Les' input!
Ariel, I am sorry that from your reply, I still cannot have a clear idea
whether you have tried backing up to local drive. From the Event Log, I
still found the following error information:
"Error: An inconsistency was encountered on the requested media."
As Les said, we do not need to modify the settings in Backup script to
prevent it backing up open files, since we use Volume Shadow Copy service.
So I suggest that we rerun the Backup Wizard to create a new Backup
script,
and manually run the NTBackup to local drive. To do so,

Please take your time to perform the steps above and collect the
information for us to troubleshoot your issue. If anything is unclear,
please feel free to let me know. I am looking forward to hearing from you!
