Locating a LAN IP Address |
|
|
Is it possible to detect a specific LAN IP address when the LAN addresses are
shared with several different computers? I have a PC on a LAN and my IP
address changes frequently and sometimes is the same as other computers in
the agency....what kind of connection would this be where several different
computers generate the same LAN IP address? |

Stacey,
I would recommend to use Microsoft newsgroups directly using a news reader
like Outlook Express (see instructions at
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/community/nntpnews.mspx) or Web interface
at http://support.microsoft.com/newsgroups/
As for the IP address conflicts, that is a task of your network
administrator to avoid that situation. DHCP server with proper network
infrastructure will help. Unfortunately, there's not much information to
help you with the solution.

No type of connection.
2 systems can not have the same IP address within the same LAN.
It seems that either the DHCP server is assigning you IP's that are
already assigned. Either specify your LAN IP statically in your Network
Card properties or find out who's stealing your IP. Most likely someone
else has the same IP specified that your DHCP assigns to you.

While it is possible it should not be as in whoever configures tcp/ip on the
network should configure the DHCP scope to not use addresses that are used
for static IP addresses which can be done with exceptions in the scope.
Usually when a computer boots up and has a the same IP address as another
computer on the network the computer will fail to initialize tcp/ip and
inform the user that the tcp/ip address you are using is already being used
on the network. The link below explains this more and even though it is an
older article I believe that the behavior is the same for Windows
2000/2003. --- Steve

network to have the same IP address? Interesting. Thanks for the advice. |
