DNS puzzle |
|
|
2 Windows Xp machines
1 windows 98 machine
1 windows 2000 server
1 windows 2003 SBS server
The new SBS server is just setup,
address is 192.168.60.5
wxyz.local domain
no machines are in the domain as of yet.
The old server is configured by someone who didn't have a clue about domains.
It's address is 192.168.60.30
DNS is setup but with a domain that is not related to this company. pb&j.com
folders are shared off of this server. For some reason this setup has worked
in workgroup with no complaints.
When I created the new server I created a new local network address,
192.168.60.0
The old server had 192.168.1.0
the day before yesterday. I changed the old server to this new 192.168.60.0
address and the three machines. I did this because the firewall/router is
now configured to use this 60.0 address with nat.
Everything is fine except the win98 machine cannont access the outside
network.
even more bizarre. I can access folders/mapped drives on the old server with
this win98 machine, but cannot ping the servers actual address??
I can ping 4.2.2.2 but half of the replies fail. It's not likely a cable
issue or hardware issue. I'm almost certain this is wins, dns, or domain
issue.
Should I remove the bogus dns domain name from this old server? I'm almost
certain that the answer is yes. I'm concerned though that I might upset the
remaining 2 users access.
Can someone please advise? I will happily supply more details but am
uncertain what more could be needed.
I've posted the ipconfig for the bad win98 and good winxp machines below

Well, the first main thing is to ONLY use your internal DNS server IP
address in your IP properties. I didn't see even see a DNS address in the
Win98 machine's properties. The XP machine is using the ISP's. If you have
an AD domain, it should use the SBS server as the DNS address, provided it;s
setup properly.
Also, pb&j.com has an illegal character in it, the "&" character. I am not
sure how DNS will handle this and would be surprised there hasn't been any
errors associated wtih it. But I am curious, what does this statement mean?
"pb&j.com folders are shared off of this server."
What folders? How is that domain name being used to share folders?

Thanks Ace! I didn't explain my problem very well. Part of it is due to my
own ignorance. I was trying to be cute by calling the example domain pb&j. I
don't believe anyone would actually use this for a domain name.
The problems that you described with the setup are being remedied. I am only
working with this network to bring it to a normal state.
The issue that caused me to post this in the first place has been solved. It
turns out the 98 machine had some other nic's that were conflicting with the
one I needed. When, after they were removed, everything worked fine.
thanks for taking the time to read and address my post!

It was a pleasure sir. Good to hear you have resolved the 98 issues.
Now, I'm off to make a pb&j and a glass of chocolate milk.
Then again, a shot of Crown and a cold Coors Lite sounds good right about
now...
:-)
