Cannot IM over VPN |
|
|
Hi, I am new to live communication server and IT in general so if I
miss information or any more is needed just let me know.
We have Live Communication server 2005 in our Glasgow office which uses
NTLM to authenticate users logging on using Office Communicator.
Everyone in our Glasgow office can IM, use video conferencing, voice
calls, application sharing, whiteboard etc. so in effect all aspects of
LCS2005/Office Communicator work fine.
The overseas office which is connected using a VPN (whose users we have
added to our Active directory) can sign in to Office Communicator use
video conference, use the whiteboard, share applications etc with us
here in the Glasgow office which is great, but here is the problem.
When someone is signed into Office communicator in the Glasgow office
we can send IM's which are received in the overseas office no problem
but when anyone in the overseas office sends an IM to Glasgow nothing
is received and an error message is shown:
"The following message could not be delivered to all recipients,
possibly because one or more persons are offline:"
If someone in the overseas office initiates a conversation the box
appears in the bottom right of the desktop with the message they have
sent, but once open there is no dialogue and it reverts back to the
same problem as above.
The other problem is we cannot sent or receive files from either office
I am not sure if this is tied in with the IM Problem.
I would appreciate any help or ideas anyone may have as I do not know
what else to try. It could be possible that it is a more fundamental
issue that I am overlooking due to a lack of knowledge
Thank you in advance

Hi George,
I can the users over VPN update their presence (i.e. when they change their
status can the Glasgow office see the change).
On the subject of not being able to send files, files are sent peer to peer
so you must ensure both ends are able to contact each other. (IM is sent via
the servers so I am surprised that it fails if presence works.)

Hi James thanks for the reply. Yes I can see a change in presence from
offfline, away, online etc. but if I add someone from the overseas
office to my contact list, and the next time they log on it shows that
I have added them they cannot add me to their list, which I find
strange also. |

I'm experiencing the exact same issue, we don't have the same geographical
distance between locations, but the principle is the same. Does anyone have
any ideas?
