We have a cluster set up where the nodes have two NICs, one used strictly
for cluster management and the other used for external access to the
cluster's resources by our users. The cluster nodes are assigned static IPs
on the management LAN and the user LAN is set to use DHCP with the IP
addresses configured to be on same subnet as the main corporate LAN. The
users do not use these DHCP assigned addresses however. In addition to these
addresses on the corporate LAN NICs we have configured virtual IPs for each
cluster node. This means that every node has two IP addresses taken from the
corporate LAN subnet, the one assigned by DHCP and the virtual IP assigned
through the cluster. We would like to eliminate the DHCP addresses so we are
not wasting addresses that is never used. I cannot find a way to do this
though. When I try to do a

ipconfig /release CORPLAN

on a node it effectively disables the interface and the virtual IP
disappears along with the DHCP address. I've tried other approaches but
cannot find a way to accomplish this. Is there a way to do this?

hi peter!

simply: no.
you need a node specific ip-address on each cluster node and a virtual
address for each cluster group. and you should not use dhcp on interfaces,
where you take virtual ipīs on it too!

We do have node-specific IP addresses for each node on the dedicated cluster
LAN. This is essentially a private LAN that will only be used for cluster
management purposes, as well as the cluster heartbeat. If we have a second
NIC in each node and want to assign virtual IPs to these NICs, do we need
physical IPs for each node as well? Users will only ever access the nodes
via the virutal IPs and as a result we are wasting IPs in this subnet if we
also have to assign physical IPs.

Totally understand your point :-)
But unfortunately, you still need those dedicated IP's on the second NIC as
well.
