hi glenn!
each cluster group has an individual virtual name and an ip address. you
should only connect to the resources within the cluster group with this
virtual name and ip, not with other names of the cluster.
the fact is, that all names and ips of all cluster groups that are active on
one cluster node can be used to connect to the resources the resides on that
node in the moment, but in the case of a failure they can only connect to
the resources if they are moved to the other cluster node too.
so do not use any other virtual names for connecting to resources of a
cluster group than the cluster group name self.

I just found out the cluster name can be used within an Outlook profile
instead of the Exchange virtual server name. Put in the exchange cluster
name and user name, and it resolves to the Exchange Virtual server where
the mailbox actually resides. This surprised me.
So I'm wondering what other applications can use the cluster name to
access resources on the cluster rather than the virtual server name.
Is Exchange an exception, or is it normal to access cluster resources
using the cluster name?
What if you have multiple resource groups. How do you get routed to the
correct resource group if you use the cluster name rather than the
resource groups network name?
This does not seem normal to me.
