management pack question |
|
|
Hello,
We're running mom 2005 and three management packs ad, sql and exchage. We've
made changes to the management pack but now there's an update for the
exchange MP and i want to upgrade the MP. My question is if I upgrade /
install will i loose the customization? is it possible to retain the
customization and upgrade the mp?
thanks

Nope, that's not quite how it works.
Here's your options:
Replace - this will remove all your changes and import the new MP
Update - this is very like replace except that it will keep company
knowledge, enable/disable changes, and your new rules. Other rule changes
are not kept.
Merge (available through command line import only) - this will keep customer
changes
To get Merge, use managementmoduleutil.exe with -I but not -R or -F.

Hi Troy, |
Normally a merge will keep yiour customisation, but it will depend what
you changed. As it will onyl do, enable/disable setting, company
knowledge base setting, it is not a lot. To be sure what will be
overwritten, you could setup a Vritual PC environment, install MOM on
it. then export your customized MP, import this in the test environment
and then import the new MP.
what you also could do is create an XML file from both .akm's (the
custome exported one and the new donwloaded one) with the resource kit
tool and also use a resource kit tool to see the difference between them

A useful tip
Right click rules that you have customised and cut and paste back to the
same location in the admin console.
It will copy the rule with the chnnges that you have made and call it "copy
of....."
Import the new MP choose the upgrade option and you will keep the "copy of
....." rules. Just delete the redundant rules and rename the "copy of" rules
back to the original name.

Toby,
Just a suggestion but you might consider creating custom rules and
disabling the default rules in the management pack rather than
replacing them. Then you don't have to copy off the rules that you
modified so they won't be overwritten. You just apply the management
pack using update so the enable/disable settings are retained. We
actually put custom rules in their own management packs to help keep
things straight. It makes things much less confusing for us.
