Remote Desktop |
|
|
I am trying to setup my workstation so I can access it remotely from home
using remote desktop. I have setup remote on the office computer (Win XP
Pro) and allowed myself to access it. When I am at home I start remote
desktop I connect to mycomputername.mydomain.com. I type in my username and
password and I login. Problem is I am logging into the server. I want to
login to my desktop. Is there something I am doing wrong or is it even
possible to login to workstations.
Thanks,
Allen |

Hi Allen,
This is SBS 2000? And your network setup is:
2 NICs in the server + a router?
1 NIC in the server + a router?
2 NICS in the server, no router?

this is SBS2000 right? (only asking because there is a MAJORLY FUNKY way to
do this in SBS2003)
You need to VPN into the network then RDP to your workstation's IP.
SBS2003 owners just use the MAJORLY FUNKY Remote Web Workplace.
PS. As a domain user you shouldn't be able to RDP to the server, you have
seriously reduced security by granting your account this permission.

OK. Then to get to the target workstation you need to first VPN into the
server and then fire up an Remote Desktop session using either the IP
address of the workstation or it's computer name. You need (port 1723 + GRE
protocol 47) forwarded from the router to your "external" NIC on the SBS
server. The GRE part is referred to as enabling "VPN Passthrough" on some
routers.

looks like I have another problem to solve. The Routing and Remote Access
server has stopped and I can't restart it. Try to start it but get error
message.
Source: RemoteAccess Event ID 20103 Unable to load
C:\WINNT\System32\iprtrmgr.dll.
Another Error:
Service Control Manager Event ID: 7024 The Routing and Remote Access service
terminated with service-specific error 2.
Any Ideas. I don't think I can VPN unless the Routing And Remote Access
server is started.
Thanks,

I don't suppose you know how to do this with a Bellsouth Westell wirespeed
modem do you. I can login to the modem and can get to the port forwarding
page but I am not sure where to go from there.

But what model number?
If it's a Versalink 327W, I haven't had much luck getting it to pass either
VPN or Remote Desktop traffic (in either rotuing or bridging mode). When I
encountered one of these for a client of mine, after about 4 hours of trying
(and Verizon tech support saying that they don't support "advanced
configurations" even on the routers they supply), I gave up and returned it
for a standard Westell DSL modem. Then I bought a cheap router (DLink
DI-604) for the client. All went well after that. :-)
