Hi Guys,

Were in the process of moving our own Web, and E-mail server to be hosted
internally. We have contacted the ISP and they have given us 2 additional
Public IP's. I am planning on having my own External DNS servers. My
question is what needs to happen for me to have my own External DNS servers.
I know I have to change the NS for my websites. Is there anything I need to
do on my DNS server for them to be able to route and publish email and
websites.

Thanks for your help

I have to ask why you want to do this. You should have a very good reason
for this. Otherwise you are wasting your time and will likely end in failure
anyway.

Keep in mind that if you do this, you should set up a minimum of two DNS
servers specifically for external DNS while still maintaining your in-house
internal DNS servers independently.

Why?

Hey Frank,

Thanks for the Reply.

Main reason why we want to have our own external DNS servers, is we just
bought a couple of companies. And we will be hosting around 80 sites. It
would be easier for just to manage the zones instead of having to call our
current ISP to make the changes. I do plan on setting up 2 External DNS
servers, I have already created the zones and updated all the records. I am
just waiting on the merge and start pointing the Domain Names to point to
this external DNS servers. Is there anything I should look for or take into
consideration before I fully migrate to our own External DNS servers.

Gotcha. It looks like you've got the understanding you need (a lot of folks
in this ng don't understand what they are biting off when they attempt to do
this). Anyway, I manage my own DNS via a GUI interface for 5
domains/websites without having to host my own external DNS. Instant access
and ability to make direct changes anytime. There are many places where you
can do this. But... whatever works for you I guess.

About the only thing I would ensure, before you "turn this on", is that
whomever you are leasing the IP addresses from will delegate to you the
ability to configure reverse DNS entries against their IPs. Or, at least,
will allow you to configure them using their GUI software, or something. You
will almost certainly need rDNS at some point. Definitely for mail.

Good luck. Maybe some others have some better pointers than I.

just a note encouraging you NOT to use exchage 2k or 2k3

Look into apache james, Learn to write a mailet, and you can do so
much more than exchange can if you have the time and like to tinker
with things.
