How do I move a DFS root to another server? |
|
|
I have been asked to move the DFS Root from a member server so that it can
be rebuilt for another purpose. I have another server that can act as the
root server but I am not finding a good reference to do this. Any
suggestions?
Thanks,

See the DFS FAQ at
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/techinfo/overview/dfsfaq.mspx.
The question you want is "Q. How do I back up and restore a DFS namespace or
move a DFS namespace from one server to another? "

This refers to a stand-alone DFS root. Mine is a domain based DFS root. Is
it the same procedure?
Thanks

Yes, it's the same procedure. You just need to be sure to create a
domain-based root on the new server, then do the import.

Great Thanks for the info.
What would be the difference with a "New Root Target"? Couldn't I create a
New Root Target using the DFS snap-in, and then once that is established,
delete the original Root Target?

Absolutely, assuming that you don't hit the one-root-per-server limit in
Standard/Web Editions of W2K3.
