Hi All,

Has anyone actually had the issue of trying to use mount point with
DFS.

According to article Q.867712 - You cannot create DFS links that point
to a folder that is under a volume mount point in Microsoft Windows
Server 2003.

I was going to create the DFS root on a physical drive and then create
links to shared folders also located on that physical drive (which
might be 2TB). What I planned to do for future growth is that if the
data stored in those shared folders reached the capacity of the
storage, then rather than create a new bigger volume and move the data
or create a new share on another volume I would to use a mount point of
2TB to extend the original volume.

I wanted to use mount points rather than extending the physical drive
because by extending the drive I would require better restore
throughput to restore the larger volume in the same amount of time.
With mount points the "drive" would appear larger but each volume would
still be 2TB.

However according to this article if I had a share called ITData on the
physical drive, and a folder called IT Policies located on the mounted
drive I would be unable to create a DFS Link that points to
\\server\ITData\IT Policies. Am I understanding this correct?

Does anyone know if this an isssue that Microsoft plans to address in
the future or is there some actual restriction that will result in this
limitation not being resolved?

Cheers
AO.

Hi AO,

That KB is actually incorrect. You can create LINKS from folders lying below
a volume mount point. What you cannot do is create a DFS ROOT from a folder
lying below a volume mount point.

We've just put this into production (so you never know, we might uncover
some serious issue down the line) and it seems to be working just fine. Our
scheme (not developed by ourselves though I'm not sure if the guy who did it
would want crediting here!) is to use a number of small (0.5GB) volumes, each
of which is assigned a drive letter. These volumes are used as "mount point
roots" with folders following a naming scheme for each of the 200GB volumes
that we're using to provide storage. Three 200GB LUNs are mounted per root
and data on them is presented as DFS links

Adding storage to our cluster now consists of just creating a new VS,
allocating a 0.5GB volume on a drive letter and mounting new volumes (we
limit the quantity of storage on each VS for reasons of backup\restore
performance).

Speaking of which. Do you have a good reason for wanting to use a 2TB
volume. Have you thought about the consequences for backup \ restore times?

Good luck.

Matt
