I have 2 dc's that are 2003 sp1.
I was trying to separate some dhcp scopes and split up a .20 subnet on one
of them and a .30 on the other.
One thing I noticed before I started is that if DC 2 goes down then DC 1
can't resolve external dns infor, so I can't ping like google, etc.
I tried NSLOOKUPS on dc 1 and DC2. DC1 can't resolve the external names but
dc 2 can.
We are NOT using forwarders except to some other internal domains for a
parent company and these should just be setup as root servers.
What can I look for? Also DC1 is dual homed on the .30 and .20 network. So
it has a .20 ip and nic and a .30 IP and nic
I am going to get rid of the .20 nic which is why I am moving that over to
the 2nd dc and I can't do that until I figure out why the dns isn't working
for external requests.

On the faulty DNS server.
Check the DNS root hints.
Check that it has access to the internet.
use nslookup on external dns server.
