After MOVEUSER cannot open MyDocs file! |
|
|
I'm hoping someone will have an idea about this because I was planning to
use MOVEUSER for several user migrations I'm supposed to be doing ASAP. But
now I'M HOLDING OFF because...
I ran "moveuser olddomain\user newdomain\user /k /y" successfully.
Then I renamed profile folder: user.old-domain -> user.new-domain.
Then I edited registry to change ProfileImagePath value to match the new
folder name.
I logged in as newdomain\user OK... settings/data seem to have been
largely preserved, BUT...
PROBLEM = when user tried to open a file in MyDocuments they got "access
denied"!
Questions:
Q1: Was my syntax OK? "/k /y" I believe this is what I used in my
previously successful tests.
Q2: I assume that the renaming of profile folder and ProfileImagePath value
would not cause this "access denied". I've renamed before without problems.
Is this a good assumption on my part?
Q3: I just logged out as admin and logged in as user. Should I have
rebooted? Could that be my only problem? Unfortunately I forgot to try a
reboot when I was on-site yesterday. (The reason I'm speculating about
reboot is that I had a similar problem getting moveuser to even run without
"access denied" and it was fixed w/ a reboot)
Q4: Otherwise, what could cause this? (permissions??) And more importantly
how might I fix it??
Thanks to anyone who has insight on this!

Hi Rich,
Q1: I think the syntax is correct.
Q2 & Q4: Please describe how you modify the registry in detail. Including
which location and which value.
Q3: After such operation, reboot is needed.

Syntax seems to work fine.
I found that you are right, REBOOT AFTER MOVEUSER is important.
I also found that renaming profile folders and ProfileImagePath registry
values does work. However some applications (like Outlook!) which keep
hard-coded paths to data/settings files, will break (in Outlook you have to
repoint to PST's). So I've now decided that renaming profiles is not worth
that risk.
