Ok, I am suppose to be the computer guru at my office. Well, this one had me
stumped so I called in a pro to help. It had him stumped too. he worked on
this for 3 hours and still didnt get it fixed. We are using Windows 2000
server.

It started by we uninstalled a program from our partitioned C drive and put
it on the D drive because the C was too full. Well when we tried to access
the program, it kept giving us a dll error. would not tell us what dll. and
then I could not access the add/remove program folder or the windows up date
page. so we decided to restore our system state from 2 days ago (when
everything was ok). well now, that our computers were shut down overnight,
when we logged on this morning nothing was right. we logged on and we were
able to use from our workstations the internet which is on the server, we
are able to print to the printers that are connected to the server but we
were not able to access any of the documents or programs on the server from
any of the workstations. we thought maybe a security issue. we reset the
securities. and still cant access. when we click on the my network
neighborhood and the server name or the folder on the server that we want to
access, it asks us for user name and password. (not sure what these are).

really strange. I need big help. not sure what else to try.

Not sure how the problem you described has anything to do with DNS.
Maybe, you should elaborate on how you are convinced DNS
is not working?

Is this an AD domain?
What was the program you uninstalled and how does it relate to this?

I guess I am not sure what is going on here. What is and AD domain. I just
know that we cannot access the domain.

ok, on the server today, when I went into active domain users, it told me
domain is not available or not active. I tried everything I can think of,
when I finally got in to the users, I deleted a user and readded him and
deleted a computer and readded it and none of that worked. It just keeps
telling me the domain is not available or no such domain.

Can you post the ipconfig /all for the domain controller? (unedited)
Need to make sure this is not a disjointed namespace, single-label domain
name, and to make sure the DC (as all members should) is using only the DNS
server that supports the AD domain. List the forward lookup zones and the AD
domain name from ADUC will be quite helpful, because this will tell me if
this is a disjointed namesopace.

ok, when I get to work tomorow I will try to get all this stuff and reply to
your message, however, I mentioned in a previous post that we restored the
system state, well when I looked at the date on the tape back up for the
system state that we restored, It said 'copy' and I think the date was
3/2003. This was roughly when we bought the machine. could this be the
problem? maybe it lost all the user id's? also what is an AD and ADUC and
DC, I am not familiar with these letters.

thanks for your help though

what program did you uninstall/reinstall ?
next time you run out of space on your C drive, move the pagefile to your
other drive. it's the quickest way to free up space normally.

Very possible

Again, very possible.

AD = Active Directory
ADUC = Active Directory Users & Computers

ok. I ran the netdiag this am and it is telling me that
domain membership test failed - this system volume has not been completely
replicated to the local machine. this machine is not working properly as a
DC.

DC discovery test .... failed
cannot find DC in domain 'RCRC'. (ERROR_NO_SUCH_DOMAIN)
now what?
