Just noticed a strange thing with my outlook.
I have it open in the background and normally see new e-mails pop into their
folders and can then bring outlook forwards and read.
But today I noticed that with Outlook running in the background (not
minimised just behind other windows) no e-mails appear to come in.
As soon as I click on a folder in outlook suddenly e-mails appear.
Never seen this before.
Any thoughts?

If I had to guess, I'd suspect the display of the background window may not
be refreshing. In other words, when you bring the window into the
foreground, the display updates to show items that are actually already
there. If this is annoying, you could try to see if it happens when few
applications are running, or see if there's a driver update for your video
card.

If this were Outlook 2003, I'd be suspecting a cached mode issue, but 2002
doesn't use cached Exchange mode.

Tried updating the display adaptor and still no joy.
Thing is when I can click on the outlook frame and move the whole window
around and nothing happens. but when I click on any folder in my inbox I see
the flying email then messages are there.
in fact the same happens when I send an e-mail. it will look like it's
sitting in myoutbox till I click on a folder then it moves to sent.
It's almost like Outlook doesn't bother to check that actual exchange state
till I click a folder.
Wierd.

You're not having any other networking performance issues?

Anything in the event logs on the client PC? Are you seeing this on only
one, or are all users effected?

If you're not having other network issues and nothing's getting logged, I
guess the first thing I'd do is to try creating a new mail profile to see if
it goes away. You can just create a profile with a different name and set
it for Outlook to prompt you for the profile at startup. Select the new
profile. If the problem is gone, you can change the setting to default to
the new profile. If it's not gone, set it to default back to the old one,
which will save you from having to do all your personal settings in the new
profile.

Only on mine as far as I know but most others only have outlook running as
required so may not have noticed. Will have to test.
I can log on as another user on my PC and see if that changes thing. that
will let me know if the PC or profile are the problem.
Otherwise the network is fine and no event logs of any significance.

Ok outlook is fine on another computer. Updates happen in the background.
A new profile on my PC gives the same problem of no refresh in Outlook.
So looks like it's a machine related issue.
But what can it be? Everything else is behaving just fine.

Try a Repair Install of Outlook would be the next step then.

Well that seems to have fixed it. Thanks Steve.
Hadn't thought to try a repair as it was a recent install.
