Easy question |
|
|
I have an easy problem but I am not sure how to do it, basically I want a
head start before I start my MCSA
Basically I have Server 2000 and I am trying to set up DNS and exchange. I
have managed to set up DNS with my own network of home.mcsa and
server1.home.mcsa bedroom.home.mcsa etc
I managed to set up exchange for internet e-mail but my friend tried
e-mailing my IP address and it didn't get though. I now have a domain
chris.modreview.com and I know the IP address's of the name servers etc and
I want to be able to set up my network using this domain. I can set up my
network on chris.modview.com and have server1.modreview.com but I want to
know if I need to do any other configuration with this new domain
I.E before I set up a domain that wasn't registed on the internet, but now I
am setting up a domain using a registered domain, do I need to do anything
different, and how can I make e-mails going to say admin@chris.modreview.com
go to my server IP and in to my server
I hope you understand this
Many thanks,
Chris |

There are several reasons why the mail didn't go through.
1. Port 25 not open between the internet and your server.
2. Port 25 not forwarded in the router to the Exchange server.
3. Exchange not configured in the recipient policy to accept mail for
@<IPAddress>

You have to make sure chris.modreview.com resolves to the IP of your router
and port 25 is forwarded the Exchange server, or you have an MX record in
chris.modreview.com that points to an A record the resolves to your public
IP and matches your HELO name. You also need a PTR record for your IP that
gives the Exchange server's HELO name. The HELO name is configured on the
SMTP virtual server, on the Delivery tab, advanced button.
Don't confuse the Active Directory domain name with your public domain name,
these two do not need to be related.

Re: Easy question |

Ok so if I can decipher that lol
I need to open port 25 on my router to my server IP, that's done and
probably was my problem at first as I don't think I did that then. You also
state that I need to ensure that my domain points to my IP or in my domain
an MX record that points to an A record that resolves my server IP and
matches my HELO name. Ok I will try all that out and see if I can get
something running.
Thanks a lot,
Chris

that doesn't go out basically but for external I would set it to my domain

Thanks a lot for the help,

No Change the name to a valid FQDN such as chris.modreview.com which should
already have an A record. It is recommended you have an MX record, create an
MX record for chris.modreview.com giving chris.modreview.com as the mail
server name.

|
Using System Manager on the Default recipient policy on the E-mail addresses
tab, add and select @chris.modreview.com and set it as the Primary e-mail
address. This should propagate down to all mail enabled users. Verify this
in your user account in ADU&C on the e-mail addresses tab create a new SMTP
address for chris@chris.modreview.com and make it your default e-mail
address.
You can also add chris.modreview.com to AD Domains & Trusts as an
alternatative UPN suffix, then change the UPN logon in your user account
then you can logon with your own e-mail address.

Ok now its all going over my head and i have changed a few things. Maybe we
could roll thigns back a bit.
I have the external domain chrisharries.com registerd. I have my internal
network home.mcsa configured with DNS and i have server1.home.mcsa with my
exchange server and DNS, DC everything on it.
I have opened port 25 to my IP 192.168.1.100
I have added an MX record in my Registar's DNS for my External IP address
I have an MX record in my server1 for server1.home.mcsa
I have an A record for server1 pointing to home.mcsa and the IP address
192.168.1.100
Server1 has a static IP address of above with DNS of 192.168.1.100 (same as
its IP) and gateway of router 192.168.1.1
My FQDN is server1.chrisharries.com for my exchange server
I have interal Mail working so Administrator@home.mcsa and chris@home.mcsa
works fine but now i want chris@chrisharries.com etc etc to be working
externally
What else do I need to do
Thanks for putting up with me hehe,

Re: Easy question |

Ok i went though what you said. And as it stands
On my server:
MX record to chrisharries.com
MX record to server.home.mcsa
Name server to server.home.mcsa
A record to 192.168.1.100
A record to chrisharries.com with IP address being my external IP
@chrisharries.com added as my primary SMTP e-mail address is default policys
this propergated to my other users aswell so its now
Administrator@chrisharries.com
FQDN is chrisharries.com
On my web registra:
A record to my external IP
MX record to chrisharries host which goes to external IP as priorty 0
I think thats everything you suggested and it still doesnt work. I cant run
the 'internet mail wizerd' as of an error which i asked of in anther board,
although you didnt sat this was necessary, and it could be that my updated A
and MX records havent propergated around the internet if i have done
everything you said although as it stands it doesnt work it just returns
from my ISP
Thanks
Chris

I think thats everything you suggested and it still doesnt work. I
cant run the 'internet mail wizerd' as of an error which i asked of
in anther board, although you didnt sat this was necessary, and it
could be that my updated A and MX records havent propergated around
the internet if i have done everything you said although as it stands
it doesnt work it just returns from my ISP

Did you give the MX record a name?
What name did you give your mail server?
If you are using chrisharries.com as the mail server name you are going to
have a problem because there are two A records for the name an only one I
suspect is yours.
Another problem you have is your reverse lookup says your IP is
"82-34-243-72.cable.ubr03.gill.blueyonder.co.uk." You'll need to have your
ISP change that PTR or make that your mail server name, this will work
because there is an A record for the name.
So to make everything line up and match, here is what I would do, change the
HELO name to 82-34-243-72.cable.ubr03.gill.blueyonder.co.uk. then create a
new MX record with a Prioity of 05 pointing to
82-34-243-72.cable.ubr03.gill.blueyonder.co.uk. as the mail server name. You
cannot use CNAMES in MX records so you need to get the PTR fixed or use the
name already on the PTR.
