After recovering from a disaster (using Veritas BE) my SBS 2000 machine no
longer fully shuts down when shutting down or restarting. Everything seems to
be off, there is nothing on the monitor and the keyboard isn't functioning,
but it just hangs or stays like that. I have to hit the power button to
actually have it shut down.
The server is newer (not quite 2 years), a Dell 1600SC running dual Xenon
processors.
Any ideas what could have caused this?

There are issues when using Veritas BE to do complete disaster restores of
an SBS 2000 system. They have to do with Windows use of both short file
names (SFN) and long file names (LFN). A LFN may have a different SFN upon
restoration. Some of the MS components are referenced by SFN. This can mean
a reference to the wrong file and can cause seemingly random problems.

The basic procedure is to reinstall SBS 2000 the way you initially installed
it and then do a complete restore on top. Disk image backups/restores get
around this problem if you can do them on your system. BE does not provide
such an option.

I believe that this problem has been eliminated/reduced in SBS 2003, but I
don't believe is was solved for SBS 2000 and any version of BE. The problem
and suggested procedures for complete restores have been discussed
extensively here in the past. Search newsgroups for terms like SFN, LFN,
restore, and Jeff Middleton. One hit is
http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.backoffice.smallbiz2000/browse_frm/thread/76d0e410365c6307/2015330cee686304?lnk=st&q=SFN+LFN+Jeff+middleton&rnum=1#2015330cee686304.
See if any of these relate to your situation.
