My customer is using SBS 2000 and they are reaching the 50 user limit fast.

What are my options?

Can I add a Windows 2000 server and do a DC promo and get the active
directory onto a true Windows 2000 server?

before SBS 2003 came out you would purchase the 'migration pack' which took
SBS 2000 to something resembling the old 'Back Office' servers, where the
user and domain limits are removed and the various services could be
installed onto seperate boxes.

Since SBS 2003, the 2000 'migration pack' has been discontinued. You must
first upgrade them to SBS2003 then apply the 'Transition Pack'. (AFAIK)

BUT, gotta ask!!! Are you aware that SBS 2003 raises the CAL limit to 75?
Would this satisfy your expectations for a reasonable time? An inplace
upgrade to SBS2003 is a well known procedure and quite reasonably priced, as
an SBS2000 owner they are eligible for upgrade to SBS2003 Premium for a
similar cost to normal purchase of SBS2003 Standard.

I really want to get away from SBS. I want to go to a multi server, windows
2000 environment. They have manu applications, and 1 server is not goint to
cut it anymore.

I think more like 4-5 servers will be the answer for the future.

They have already commited to 2 and I just want to convert the active
directory over to a 2000 server and eventually remove the SBS server.

Gumby,

I have a similar situation except throw in a site that will soon have
its own pirvate link and another SBS 2k server. I would like to get rid
of the SBS 2k servers on both sides. I have already transitioned to Win
2k3 and Exchange Enterprise 2k3 for hosting the email. I realize the 75
GB limit in SP2 but I cannot imagine having to defrag a db even half
that size if something were to go wrong. I chose 2k3 Ent. because of
the ability to seperate the db's into smaller groups. Yes you lose the
single instance storage across db's but defragging a 4 GB db vs. a
16-20GB db seems a reasonable tradeoff.

So my point is that I want to get to the point where I can get rid of
the Exchange portion of SBS and it seems that th e only way to do it is
to Upgrade to SBS 2k3 and purchase the transition pack and then
uninstall Exchange. Is that correct? Also, can I make the 2k3 Exch. Ent
the master Exchange Schema box or would that throw SBS 2k into a loop?

Thanks,
Don
