DFS Clients select wrong server |
|
|
Hello,
I have 5 DC, and 12 Sites, Site A has 3 DC, Site B has 1 DC, Site C has 1
DC, all sites connected by vpn. I have setup dfs on Site A server and created
links to all other servers and have replicaiton enabled. That seems to work.
Now, the clients are not connecting to the site server, sometimes they do,
but usually not.
I have not setup anything yet in Sites and Services (ya I know), but I
assume that is the problem.
Quesiton is, I am not fimilar with that at all, Do I create the subnets and
put the servers in the correct subnet ?
Any info would be helpful.
Thanks |

Yes and yes.
You need to define subnets for all of your sites - if some sites have
multiple subnets, define multiple subnets. Once the subnets are defined,
you create sites and associate the subnets with the sites. You then move
the server object that represents the DC and/ or FRS replica into the
correct site.
Once you have done this, you need to create site link objects. Site link
objects should represent your physical topology. For example, you have four
sites a, b, c and d. a is the hub and b and c are connected, regardless of
medium, to a; d hangs off b. Therefore, you would create site link objects:
ab, ac, bd; where each site link contains the necessary sites. If some
links are faster than others, modify the cost of the links to reflect this.
For example, if ab and ac are connected with 10MB lines and bd with 1 MB
VPN, increase the default cost on bd.
Note. The costs are just that; they don't need to represent actual
speeds. They are just used by the topology algorithm to adequately
determine lowest cost paths. Therefore as long as the slow lines have
higher costs than the fast lines, all is going to be well.

Great.
Thanks very much...
Another question, for the sites that do not have a DC, I assume I can just
create those servers in the sites and services snapin and follow the same
guidelines..
Thanks

The sites that do not have DCs will use the lowest cost DC based on
something called auto-site coverage. Just ensure that all sites, even
DC-less sites, have site links and costs.
