Hi all,

I work for a college with a fairly large NetWare infrastructure. These are
all primarily file/print servers running NetWare 5.1 SP5/SP6. Direction has
come from above that we are to migrate these servers into the Windows
2000/2003 Active Directory that we currently have in place on campus.

The NDS tree contains literally 10s of thousands of inactive accounts, so we
don't want to migrate the existing accounts over. Instead, we will use an
automated process to recreate currently active student/staff accounts.

We do however wish to migrate the data from these servers to Windows 2003
servers.

What would be the suggested method of doing this? Would Microsoft's
Services for NetWare be suitable for the task? Would a product like Quests'
NDS Migrator be a better choice?

We are also currently using Novell NetMail as our student E-mail service.
This service will continue to be offered and will be the only Novell server
remaining after the file/print servers are migrated. Since NetMail requires
NDS, I had planned to move the Master NDS Replica to this server prior to the
migration.

Rather than maintaining accounts seperately in 2 distinct Directories, I'd
like to have accounts created in AD replicated over to NDS so that we can
continue to use the NetMail system and have the student E-Mail accounts
created automatically when their login account is generated. Will MSDSS do
this? Or would I be better off looking at Novell's Account Management or
Identity Management solution for this purpose?

Thanks to all in advance.

Hello Darren,

Good to hear from you.

I believe Microsoft's Services for NetWare is suitable for the task to
migrate the data from NetWare servers to Windows 2003 servers. I suggest
that you use Microsoft's Services for NetWare.

You can choose the data to be migrated to the win2k3 domain. Please perform
the task according to the step-by-step migration of a NetWare 5.x NDS
object container to Windows Server 2003 Active Directory.

Regarding MSDSS, we can use it to synchronize user accounts between a
NetWare Directory Services (NDS) tree and Active Directory. The following
article is offered for your reference.

In addition, I suggest that you contact Novell for more information about
NetMail.

Here is some general information of Netware and Windows 2003, you can take
a look:

Hope this helps. If you have any further questions don't hesitate to get in
touch!

Best regards,

Frances He
