internet printing vs. win2k3 mscs print/iis cluster |
|
|
i have two win2k3 hosts and i'm using mscs to cluster printservices and iis.
the only piece that does not work is internet printing. if i try to access
internet printing via http://<virtual server ip>/printers, i get a page that
allows me to view and manage printers, but when i try to add a printer to my
workstation in this way, i get an error message saying "access denied". i can
successfully map and manage printers on the cluster using regular printer
sharing (\\<servername>). note that nlb is not an option in this deployment.
any help would be greatly appreciated. i can provide info about the
environment if needed. thanks. |

Dear Mr. Play Doh,
The only issue we've have seen with Internet Printing Protocol (IPP) on a
Windows 2003 Cluster Printer Server, is an issue when the Windows 2003
Cluster Printer Server joins a Windows NT 4.0 domain. The issue seems to
occur, because the Primary DNS Suffix on the server is blank (or null) and
it only uses a
NetBIOS name.
Since you're experiencing an "Access Denied" error message, I would use one
of the following articles to either troubleshoot the permissions of the
Cluster Service Account (CSA) or check the permissions at the file system
level of the Spooler folder. Another thing to check if anti-virus is being
used, to ensure there's an exclusion of the Print Spooler folder.

our win2k3 cluster is a part of a winnt4.0 domain. what specifically is the
symptom of the primary dns suffix being blank? i've manually added a dns
suffix, but that hasn't resolved the issue.

FYI, I threw that out there because I have been on a streak where WINS is

yes, we have wins configured and nbtstat returns expected results.

the resolution was to uninstall/reinstall the 'internet printing' component
of iis. thanks for all the tips!
