I current made the switch on one system to the new 2k3 Enterprise. Now that
the switch is complete, access to the internet is working but I cannot access
files on any other server in the workgroup with share volumes. The other
servers appear in the workgroup window, but then when opened they produce a
dialog box having to do with insufficient access privileges, any assistance
would be much appreciated.

Hi Bat,

I have a couple of questions about this issue:

1. What do you mean by " Migration from 2k to 2k3 in a WORKGROUP
environment"? Please let me know the details about your migration steps and
the network topology.

2. What is the meaning of " The other servers appear in the workgroup
window, but then when opened they produce a dialog box having to do with
insufficient access privileges "? do you mean when you navigate "My network
places" and double click other servers, you received an error? Please take
a screen shot of the error including the servers you see in "My Network
Places" and send it to v-rebc@microsoft.com for research.

I suggest you access the server by IP address:
1. Click Start->Run
2. Key in the Ip address of the server you want to access in Run box. What
is the result?

Any update, let us get in touch!

Best regards,

Rebecca Chen

1. Topology is a small business network of standalone servers. Was setup
originally as a 2k workgroup, with one machine doing the bulk of the file
serving and the others working as clients and backups of the original. This
network is used more for file serving in an intranet type setting. No web
server or domain established. "Migrating" from 2k to 2k3 for increased
stability, more features, and better quality design. Was planning on updating
only a couple of the standalone servers, since one is primarily designed for
2k and will be replaced by a newer machine in a short time.

2.) Yes, my network places. I would go in and attempt to access the other
servers in the workgroup and 2k3 would not recognize the 2k machines in the
same workgroup."network path invalid or not available", something to that
affect.

3.) Attempted to access the server IP by the run command and was unsuccessful.

4.) After posting, I conducted a reinstall of the software and it appears to
be functioning correctly now. Perhaps an installation fluke, a wrong check
box in one place or another.

Hi Bat,

Do you mean the issue disappeared after reinstalling of the software? If
so, probably this issue was caused by the incorrectly software installation.

Technically speaking, we will create the user account on both servers with
the same user name and password so that you can access the shares in the
workgroup. Alternatively, you can grant the everyone full control
permission on some shares if it is not in a high security environment.

Further questions, let us get in touch!
