I'm wondering if DFS might allow me to create several million links in
a DFS root (I'll deal with question of performance later...). The
environment is 32-bit i386 2K3 Enterprise Ed, w/SP1.

Anyone know where limits to DFS might be written?

Much obliged,

Dave

Our recommended limits are in the DFS FAQ at
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/techinfo/overview/dfsfaq.mspx.

The question you want is named "Q. What are the DFS size limits and
recommendations for Windows Server 2003?"

Our recommended limits fall well below several million. I'm not aware of any
hard-coded limits in the system, but I would assume that the snap-in itself
would have great difficulty displaying this many links. Even if you did this
programmatically, you would have to deal with the service start-up times. We
did some testing of startup times for stand-alone namespaces--see the
appendix in the paper available for download at
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/upgrading/nt4/tooldocs/msfst_overview.mspx.
