I have a small company with one NT4 domain controller (no BDC), which does
not have enough disk space for an in-place upgrade. Approximately 30 client
PCs. I have two member file servers running Win2K, one of which I would like
to use for the new domain controller. Can I install Active Directory and
promote the Win2K file server and use ADMT to migrate settings? It seems to
me that I would then have an NT domain controller and a Win2K domain
controller on the same system. That seems strange to me. I'm sorry, but I
can't find the answer to this anywhere. Is ADMT useful beyond translating
users and groups, of which I have very few, and could recreate manually if
needed?

Hello,

Thanks for your post.

From your message, I understand that your concern is to gain a win2k
domain. If I have misunderstood, please let me know.

Regarding your question, I don't think it's possible to install Active
Directory and promote the Win2K file server. Because you cannot promote
your file server to be DC in an NT domain, I feel that this option may not
be the most practical.

According to your scenario, I suggest the following two methods to achieve
your goal to gain a win 2k domain.

Method 1: Upgrade to win2k domain.
=====================================
I suggest you buy another computer, and perform an "not in place" upgrade.
It is the easiest way to achieve your goal.

Performing a "not in place" upgrade
======================

1.Install NT 4.0 BDC on the new box.

2.Promote the BDC to the PDC, which demotes the PDC to a BDC.

3.Do a full backup of the former PDC and remove it from the network.

4.Upgrade the new PDC to Win2k. If you want to expand the boot partition,
please refer to the following KB:

325857 How To Expand the Boot Partition During a Windows Server 2003 Upgrade
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=325857

5.Use the win2k Active Directory wizard to turn on the Active Directory
service. The Active Directory service imports the existing user accounts,
groups, and other settings from the PDC.

6.Run your new win2k domain controller with Active Directory for a test
period.

7.If desired you can do a clean installation of win2k on the former PDC,
and bring it online as an Active Directory domain controller.

8.Transfer all Flexible Single-Master Operation (FSMO) roles to the new
win2k domain controller.

9.Verify all directory information has replicated.

10.Demote the first domain controller to a member server, and remove from
the domain.

Method 2: Migrating to win2k domain.
======================================
In this way, you need to buy another computer, install win2k on it, and
then promote it to be a DC.

Please use ADMT to perform the migrate task.

The Recommended Migration Order is listed below for your reference:
1. Trust migration (UI Only)
2. Service account migration
3. Domain Global Group
4. Domain Local Group
5. User migration
6. Computer migration
7. Security translation
8. Report
