You almost certainly have to go via SNA 4.0 as SNA 3.0 hasn't been supported
in a while.

What o/s version are you currently running?

If you're on Windows 2000 then upgrade to SNA 4.0, then immediately upgrade to
HIS 2004.

If you're running NT4 then upgrade to SNA 4.0, then upgrade to Windows 2000,
then upgrade to HIS2004, then upgrade to Windows 2003. That's the supported
way.

Unsupported, but should work, is SNA 4.0, then Windows 2003, then HIS 2004.
(SNA4 not supported on Windows 2003, but it does work, not that I'd want to run
it in production that way).

We have NT4 sp6a. You say that I have to upgrade through SNA 4.0 Win2k etc..
Does Microsoft offer some upgrade Kit or must you buy the different programs
just for the upgrade?

I dont know how this works with Microsoft. I have worked a lot with midrange
computers such as IBM:s AS/400.

They always offered some upgrade kit.

Spitzer,

I'm not aware of any such thing as an "upgrade kit" licensing wise - you'd have to
talk to your local MS Sales office to see what they have.

An alternative upgrade path would be.....

1. Upgrade existing server to SNA4.0/SP4.
2. Build a new W2003/HIS2004 server into the subdomain as a backup.
3. Migrate the links/resources across to the new server (amending any clients as
you went).
4. Turn off the SNA4 server once you've done.

Your problem is that you're running versions of SNA and NT that are so old that MS
doesn't offer a direct upgrade path to what you want to get to.

It might even be worth considering just building a completely new/parallel
W2003/HIS2004 infrastructure and then just migrating your clients across to the new
setup at your own leisure.

As always there are many, many ways to skin a cat. Which would be the best for you
would be a longer discussion than could really be done via the newsgroups. Maybe
you could ask your local MS office for a referral for a local consultant with
SNA/HIS skills to help you through it.

I noticed you said you do mostly printing. You might want to test your
printing on a test W2K server to make sure you don't have any print
formatting issues with the new operating system. The drivers changed between
NT and Windows 2000.
