Hello

We want to upgrade some WNT4.0 servers to Windows 2003, but we have
problems during the upgrade....
This is the our scenario:

WNT 4.0 SP6 application server (SAS server), no BDC, no PDC; stand
alone server.

We want to upgrade the server to Windows 2003, we wanted to know if
all the applications running on the NT server will run on the new OS.
We downloaded the Application Compatibility Toolkit, ran the
collector.exe on it, and ran the Analyzer on a Windows 2003 server. We
have 64 applications on the WNT server and only 6 are checked by the
Analyzer, the rest are unknow.

Now we don't know the next step... create fixes from the
compatibility admin?, upgrade the server?....
Please help us

Many thnks
Best
David

Hello David,

Thanks for your post.

If the rest of the applications are checked and resulted in "unknown"
status, we cannot guarantee that the applications can properly run on
win2k3 server since the applications are developed and maintained by
third-party vendors and are probably written with back-ward languages. If
this is the case, I suggest that you contact the vendors of the
applications to see if they can provide the latest versions compatible with
win2003.

Besides the Application Compatibility Toolkit, you can use "winnt32
/checkupupgradeonly" on WinNT before you upgrade to win2k3 to check if
there are hardware and software compatibility issues with Win2k3 server.

More details can be found in the following article.

244632 How to Test Programs for Compatibility with Windows
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=244632

Regarding your scenario, I suggest that you set up a test environment to
test the compatibility of the applications with win2003 to make sure of the
result.

Hope it helps. If you have any further questions don't hesitate to get in
touch!

Best regards,

Frances He
