As we understand it, ICF (Internet Connection Firewall) comes as standard
with Windows Server 2003 and, therefore, presumably with SBS2003.
We have been having enourmous problems trying to configure the version of
ISA that came with SBS 2003 and are wondering whether to rely on ICF.
Your comments and observations would be welcomed.

I wouldn't use the 2003 firewall to protect my network, even if I didn't
have Premium (and hence, ISA). Figure out what's going on with your ISA
issues....post some details, and I'm sure some of the experts in here can
help you with it. |

Hi,
We have posted the issues but they were not resolved - but, here they are
again:
SBS2000 + ISA
SBS2003 (currently + ISA)
1) Outlook 2003: we need to connect from clients direct to POP mail boxes at
our ISP. Why not use Exchange? It's a hangover from SBS2000 when there wasn't
the facility to catch ill-formed addresses. We like what we've got (keeping
the gunge away from everything else). Problem: when we try to send or receive
mail Outlook just seems to hang. We randomly get a connection and transmit
and received. This isn't an ISP issue. Our SBS2000 box connects without a
problem.
2) RealPlayer: As a small organisation (hence the use of SBS) we're fairly
free about what we allow ourselves to do. We like to use RealPlayer to listen
to programmes on the BBC site (especially, "I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue" -
which is appropriate for our current situation!). On SBS2000 this is not a
problem - on SBS2003 it is in that we can't get any streaming. We've followed
the same MS advice on how to set it up on both servers. We know the problem
is ISA related. We did a reinstall of SBS2003 without ISA and RealPlayer came
streaming through without any apparent problem. After re-installing ISA and
following the MS advice, Realplayer would stream for us. (As an aside, is it
possible to turn ISA off so we don't have to keep uninstalling and installing
when we're testing?)
3) Internet Hearts: We know this isn't critical to any organisation, but on
our SBS2000 box we can connect to the game server and on SBS2003 we can't. We
add this to our list on the basis that it might just point someone towards
pinpointing the root of our problems.
