SMTP Virtual server take internet down |
|
|
I installed a new SBS 2003 server into an existing 2000 AD domain.
Everything is working great except this. We have a 256 DSL connection to the
internet. Ever since I setup the Exchange part of SBS our internet has come
to a screeching halt. I figured out that when I stop the default SMTP
virtual server, out internet is back to normal speed. But when I start the
SMTP virtual server our internet is basically down. I looked in the queues
and there is between 0-5 messages going out at any given time. I have
checked to make sure that I am not relaying. Any help would be greatly
appreciated. |

You do realise that SBServer 2003 cannot be a permanent member of
another domain ?
SBS 2003 - Must Br- the Root of the Forest holding all the FSMO Rolls
and the GC.
( You can join for 7 days in order to do a migration and Data Transfer
only )

When I set it up I joined the server to the domain and then ran DCPROMO and
then transfered all the FSMO and GC.

SBS Standard or Premium? really, is ISA available/installed?
Do you have a router between SBS and DSL?
I see no reason why a couple of outgoing messages would saturate your
internet connection, I'm wondering what may be incoming at the time. If you
have either ISA or a router we can close of incoming connections, see if it
has an effect.
I suppose it's worth asking. The few items in the queues, are they
large?(>20MB each)
It may sound simplistic but have you asked everyone to stop sending mail.
Let the queues clear. With the queues empty is the problem still apparent?
The other thing we can do if ISA is installed is to prioritise traffic, put
SMTP on a low priority and all other traffic normal.

I do not know why, but the problem cleared up over the weekend.
It is Standard with no ISA installed. We have a netscreen router between.
I will update if the problem occurs again.
Thanx for all the help!!
