Hi all,
I'm trying to get a feel for what HIS most users have running. I'm not
too familiar with HIS server, but need to become familiar with how users
typically use the HIS services.

There are 5 services on my HIS install that are running by default:
SnaBase
SnaRpcSvc
SnaMngAgent
SnaHostAcctSync
SnaDDM
Do users ever stop any of these do to them not being needed? Or are
these all pretty much needed all the time? I also have some other
services that are not running by default:
TN3270
TN5250
SnaServr
SnaPrint
SharedFoldersGateway
Are these ever started manually by the user? or just somehow
automatically started by HIS when needed?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Dan

HIS is a bit of a mixed bag of different & related technologies. Very few
people will run all the services, and even in the unlikely event they did, they
almost certainly wouldn't do it on the one/same server!

You've got to have this one for any of the other services (that start sna) to
work. It's the core "comms" bit everything uses (sort of)

Quote:
SnaRpcSvc

Not sure what this one is!

Quote:
SnaMngAgent

Used to for SNA Servers management comms

Quote:
SnaHostAcctSync

Used if you're doing SSO (Single Signon) - Password Synch - between
NT/W2K/W2003 domains and a host.

Quote:
SnaDDM

Distributed data stuff - e.g. DB2 connections

Don't install them if you don't need them. Stop/disable them if they're
installed but not required. They'll use minimal resources, but why have
something unnecessary using resources.

TN3270
TN5250

Only needed if you're going to use "Telnet" clients into the SNA Server

SnaServr

The fact this isn't running tells me you've either got just a
client/management install, or, perhaps, you do have the server installed but
you haven't configured it yet. This service is needed to provide
3270/5250/LU2/LU62 type comms to any client connecting in. It also provides
all SNA comms to the host.

Quote:
SnaPrint

Only needed for SNA Printing

Quote:
SharedFoldersGateway

Only needed for SharedFolders - an AS/400 only thing.

Pretty much, if they're needed/configured they should be set to auto-start.

No problem Dan. What are you about to do with HIS that requires you to
become familiar with it?

Neil,

The SnaRpcSvc is used for specific functions within the SNA Manager/MMC
Console. It is a required service, and can not be removed.
