Install Win2003 with no Sharepoint |
|
|
Not sure where to ask this, but I just went thru a real PIA install of SBS
on our remote server, and had lots of problems with SPS.
We are upgrading our main server to Win2003 Server (not SBS) and was
wondering if we can install without Sharepoint Services. FPSE will offer
all the web apps we need.
I saw a Microsoft article somewhere that disussed removing SPS if not
requireed, and just using FPSE. We host multiple web sites (different
domain names) on both servers using host header names, and maybe this is I
had so many problems on our farm server.
Just curious.
Also, I have come across Sharepoint Services, Windows Sharepoint Services,
and Sharepoint Team Services. Are these all the same thing ???
Trying to ramp up from IIS5 to IIS6 ... so far so good except for SPS.
Thanks ...

I'll answer what I can of this.
1. You can't have SPS 2003 (SharePoint Portal Server 2003) without the WSS
"layer" (which installs as part of a SPS 2003 installation and is listed in
Control Manager / Add... Programs as a separate item to SPS 2003 to confuse
us all).
2. You can of course use FP SE if you want and not install SPS / WSS, nobody
is forcing you.
Installations of Sharepoint Products (if you decide anyway to install either
SPS 2003 or WSS) are best without the presence of FP SE but I'm fairly sure
FP SE can be added later (KB article ?)
3. There is no SharePoint Services, it's people being sloppy. The real name
of the 2003 product is Windows SharePoint Services. (WSS)
SharePoint Team Services was the 2001 predecessor to WSS and that (unlike
WSS which is built using ASP.NET) was a superset of FP SE.
Any help ?

Yes, that does help, thanks.
We might appreciate what WSS has to offer someday, but right now all we are
attempting is to do if get our servers upgraded to Win2003 and get our
internet websites going. I really got caught up in our underwear on our SBS
install, missing role.ini files, no access to important register keys (fixed
this, application pool identity issue).
Didn't know is WSS was necessary, like the IIS/Exchange link in Win2000,
another 'learned the hardway story'.
Thanks for your time you spend on this group.

read as *if* WSS ... (I do that kind of thing *all* the time).
Nor is IIS necessary by the way. (It's not installed by default and you have
to either install it as a service or install the Application Server role
whose wizard includes the installation of IIS (6.0)
One of the safety functions of a default Win 2003 Server installation
compared to Win 2K.
(Glad the rest helped - my pleasure)
