Having a "My Site" feature without the SPS |
|
|
Hello all,
We, a small group in a class would like to have a WSS site and each would
has a personal My Site. The group doesn't want to use the Portal Site
created. Is that possible we use WSS and personal my site for each of us? If
so, how would I create it? Any how-to article out there?
All your detail information is truly appreciated.

Apart from the fact that they can't have "My Site" as such because it *is*
only a Portal Server feature, what aspects of My Site did you want ?
1. Given enough rights they can create a Personal View (which unlike My Site
nobody else can see)
2. You can create a web part page per person full of the information (via
web parts) that they want to see when they access the site (they would
access the site via that page's URL of course), yet provided other users
have rights to access all the lists behind those web parts, they too would
be able to see the page(s).

While you can't get true "My Site" functionality (targeted links/alerts,
etc.) you can certainly simulate it. Essentially create a site template
that looks like what you want to offer people, grant them the ability to
create sites under a site collection and you're golden.

There's also the idea that I have quoted in the FAQ
