SBS CALs are perpetual, as are all Windows CALs. (TTBOMK)

Hi,

My old IT guy (before he left) was suggesting to go ahead of linux due
to the continuous licensing fee (yearly) from Microsoft.

I find this hard to believe as we are using 5 computer clients at the
moment and do not see a limitation on the time issue.

My concern now is i have a new member joining the company and it will
be an over kill if i buy another 5 license which will expire by a year.
I now know this will not be the case and thats great!

It's possible your predecessor was talking about the Microsoft Software
Assurance plan, which does have a yearly fee. Here's a little more about
it:

But that's totally different and you are just getting the "next" version
of the software.

You don't renew anything..... it's yours.

Linux guy was wrong. Our licensing may be confusing but it's not an
annual fee license like that.

Oh, I agree...The Assurance Plan is not yearly licensing, but it was the
only thing that I could think of that could work in installments,
specifically, an initial payment at the beginning of the agreement and
installments at the beginning of years 2 and 3.

Since "Linux Guy" was vague, well..... I'm sure you can see I'm only
pointing out a possibility, not a likelihood.

Mike

FYI purchasing MS Software under Open License Value also allows you to
spread the payments over a 3 year period in Annual Instalments. That's
an incredibly cost effective way to purchase the software as not only do
you get the great pricepoint of Open License, but interest free
instalments as well.

since the unmentionable guy said 12 mths he may also be talking about their
version of office. It was available via subscription for a short time.

Obviously, if this is the case, he's not aware of the fact that those people
who payed 20% of retail price intending to renew next year ACTUALLY ended up
getting a much better deal.

I didn't know about that program, Henry. Thanks for the heads-up. For
anyone else's information, I'm looking at

Hi Alan

There is one situation where a yearly renewal is required and that is if you
are using the MS Action Pack subscription for your own business. Then you
must keep the Action Pack subscription active which is a VERY small fee.
