SBS 2000 - Joining an existing Windows 2000 Server Domain |
|
|
Hello All;
A Client has contacted me about a problem that they have.
Their "SBS 2000" had crashed on them, and they had to reinstall the SBS
But before doing so, they had made the Windows 2000 Server the DC.
Now they are wanting to make the SBS 2000 back as the DC, but do not know
If they can?
Could someone shed some light on this issue please?
What they are trying to do, is to Install the SBS 2000
What will they need to do next, in order to Migrate the Account information
Over to the SBS 2000 From the Win2k Server and then make the
SBS 2k as the DC ?
Thank You

SBS 2000 cannot join another domain, even temporarily.
What they/you will need to do is install Plain Windows 2000 Server std
on the old box ( naming it the same as the old server), make it DC and
seize all the FSMO Rolls and the GC, demote and disconnect the current
DC removing references to it from the new DC. Upgrade the New Win2K
Server to SBS 2000, and then add back now member server and promote it
to being a replica Domain Controller.
Take your Backup and restore your Exchange and data, as well as
copying/moving any newer data stored on the (now) replica Domain
Controller.
If I've missed or got anything wrong in there I'm sure there are plenty
of eyes that will pick me up on it.

The complete process of recovery is documented in the Swing Migration kit at
SBSmigration.com. The practical issues are explained how to reintroduce the
same DC back into the existing domain with a clean install of server, and
reusing the existing AD.
