Hi,

Microsoft documentation clearly (to me) states that there can be one and
only one SBS2k3 server in a domain. However, in this forum I have seen some
messages in which two SBS2k3 servers mentioned in the same domain. I'm
missing something, but what?

I'm in the early stages of planning a company-wide network. The setup is a
main office and at least three branch offices, all with adsl access. The
main office will be the location at where a large amount of static
(reference)information is stored. Branch offices will store their own files.
System management (most preferably) will be done from the main office.

I have read somewhere that we can have replica domain servers (sbs2k3, if I
interpreted correctly) and this looks fine to me because I would like the
branch office users to be able to log on and work normally (without access
to the main office) in the case of an Internet connection problem.

Would sbs2k3 server(s) fit in this scheme, or should I consider straight 2k3
servers?

I would appreciate any advice, and possibly some links for reading (MS
reading stuff usually hide the bad names until it's too late to go back).

TIA,

Engin Tarhan

Ooops, I apologize twice.
First, for not setting my display name correctly. Second the "bad names" in
the last sentence should read "bad news". So much for checking only twice
before hitting Enter.

Your understanding is correct.

There can be only 1 SBServer in a Domain, and it Must be at the Root of
the Domain holding all the FSMO Rolls and GC. It does not support Trusts
or Sub Domains.

While 2 SBS Domains can communicate and share data using Pass Through
Authentication, I feel the best solution for remote offices will
probably be Replica Domain Controllers ( based on Windows 2003 std
servers ) as you outline.

( You can join an SBServer to an existing Domain for a limited period -
1 Week - for purposes of migrating that domain to SBS 2003 and this, or
the PTA may be what you are seeing people referring to. )

The FAQ reiterates some of this and more:

You are right, there can be only one SBS in a domain.

SBS must hold _ALL_ FSMO roles and as FSMO roles are exclusive in a single
forest/domain scenario (SBS does not support multiple forests or domains)
it's a logical conclusion that only one SBS can exist.

What some people get confused over is the ability to have additional DC's in
an SBS domain. YES, you can have additional DC's, they just can't be SBS's,
they must be 'vanilla' W2Kx.

I'd probably have SBS at HQ and a single DC at each remote office. Make the
remote DC's GC's as well.
Jeff would probably have SBS and a single non-DC TS at HQ.
