For WSS (Windows SharePoint Services) sites you can check usage analysis
reports. Is there a similar setting somewhere for the portal areas?

u can do that, the link is there but hidden. u can copy the wss site usage
url and change it for ur areas like this:

http://urinatrnet/CX/ureareaurl/_layouts/1033/Usagedetails.aspx
