I made a mistake and had to Add Active Directory to our Portal Server box.
I then was able to get another server up later and I have since removed
Active Directory from the portal server, but now I get service unavailable
when I go to our Portal site's URL.

I have made sure all web sites and app pools are working and running.

One thing that doesn't start that is set to Auto in preferences is the
sharepoint search service. I get a C++ Runtime error when I try to start
this service.

Does anyone have any recommendations?

Can you give detail on how you backed up before and how your SPS is
configured?
