I have found a few messages on this forum regarding this topic but not many
answers. We currently have a fully developed portal in our development
enviornment and I need to migrate this to our production enviornment. Our
production enviornment already has SPS installed so is it just a matter of
backing up the DBs from the dev enviornment and restoring them to production?
What does the spsbackup tool do?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

SPSBackup does exactly that - backs up your SPS environment.

As far as the how to's - there are two different explanations - look at the
threads for the last two days.

Yes but does it do it completely? In other words can I use this tool to
backup our dev portal and then use it to restore it to the production portal
and EVERYTHING will go with it?

Yes, again, it must be configured identically

It also depends on what changes you've made to Sharepoint. If you have
customised sharepoint by modifying physical files (i.e. additional
stylesheets, custom templates, changes to aspx pages) then these need to be
copied manually - using the provided backup tools won't include these.

Also do you really want to deploy the whole sharepoint site to production?
You may need to check what needs to be deployed - some of the backup tools
backup and restore EVERYTHING, so there is the possibility of overwriting
data in your Production environment.

There is no data on our production server yet, that's why I want to copy it
all over.
