Using ManualMC to install agents to specific MOM servers |
|
|
Can the primary MOM server be defined when using the ManualMC file approach?
Our environment contains 1 DB server and 7 MOM servers in different
geographic locations world-wide. The ManualMC file may resolve some issues
we have but we would need to be able to control which MOM server is assigned
as primary in order to ensure the agent is monitored in the most efficient
manner from a network and response standpoint.
Thanks - Greg. |

How many agents are you monitoring since you need 7 MOM servers?
The still forward all the information from the agents up to the DB server
over the WAN so i can't see how you save BW by having so many MOM servers...

The number of agents deployed is very geographical in nature - the network is
a hub and spoke form with distributed "hubs". The purpose of the distributed
MOM servers is to provide consolidation to limit bandwidth usage rather than
because of the number of agents. The WAN links to the locations where the
MOM servers are located are of limited bandwidth and the connections from
there to the servers can be very limited. We asked the same questions when
we were architecting MOM and were told that we would have much better success
with distributed MOM servers as compared to centralized MOM servers due to
the network configuration.

Out of curiosity, what do you mean by limited network bandwidth?
What I *might* do in this situation:
Write a vbscript to pull all servers that should be in MOM somewhere.
Run NSLookup on all servers to find out what the appropriate "zone" should
be, meaning where they are located... I beleive you should be able to find
this based on the first two or three octets in the IP address.
When you identify a "zone" write all servers to each zone to a different
text file.
Copy text file to appropriate servers.
It should be pretty easy to do.

If you want an agent to report to a particular dcam you config that via the
registry. You can point a agent to a different dcam, but you also have to
make sure the dcam is ready to pick it up. You can put in options for a
primary and secondary dcam.
Good luck
