Does anyone know if I can use LCS 2005 as the only PBX in an
organisation with a PSTN gateway?

Right now it can't perform this function. There was a thread I answered
back in November. This is some information from that thread:

I found an article that might be interesting. It's about 13 months old, but
it goes over why the LCS and Windows Messenger solution won't fully be able
to replace your PBX (yet).

LCS 2005 is not a replacement for a phone system...yet. I think it still
needs to interface with a PSTN gateway to do the standard numerical phone
calls. The public information that is available is that Istanbul, the new
WM client, will include these enhanced VOIP capabilities when used with LCS
2005. (Technically many of us did VOIP with WM5.0 and LCS 2003...but that
was client-to-client and was not over SIP).

Microsoft has had some publicly regarding this and a few of the trademags
and bloggers have written articles/blogs regarding it. If Microsoft is
encapsulating VOIP within the SIP protocol that would definitely be cool.

Since Istanbul is ramping up the BETA program, I am sure that more Microsoft
official information will come out through the channels. Other than what is
public, the rest of it is (obviously) under NDA.

There are applications out there that function as you describe, allowing
someone's computer to act as their phone. Cisco has done this so well that
I actually had a friend, working a remote helpdesk, setup the software to
work on his laptop. Instead of going into work he fired up his VPN and
connected to the phone system. The product is Cisco SoftPhone. Note that
they utilized the complete Cisco IP telephony solution and this wasn't an
install that he just fired up. His long distance traffic supposedly routed
over the wire and dialed out of one of the phone switches if the number was
local to an office that had the solution. If not, it would route out over
the ?PRI? and dial-out via one of MCIs long distance switches. How that
worked, I do not know.

My guess is that your best bet would be to purchase a phone system which
would allow LCS 2005 to integrate with it. My second guess is that Thomas
or one of the MSFT folks will correct me if I am wrong.

Hi,

I've read that LCS 2005 will provide voice over ip capabilities.
Currently we are on the way to change our phone system and we look for a
VOIP solution.

So, how LCS 2005 will work? does I need to have a VoIP installation in
place
before LCS 2005?
Or LCS 2005 doesn't need any special system?

I think the advantage of using Windows Messenger will help the system to
know where is the target person for a call. so if the person is at home,
this person can received a phone call to its computer directly. (is it
right?)

there is any sample installation or document anywhere about this?
for a small company (3 offices) not a big company with 1 office in each
city

;-)
thanks.
